Help with letter to MD

Why are you going over your line manager's head to request this?

^^^ This ^^^

There's a chain of command, you really want to speak to your manager first; as your don't really know what's happen or what they have in the works. IF your manager can't help you THEN ask them to setup a meeting with someone who can as that may not be the MD but the HR or People Development Team.

It's your managers job to to manage yours and the companies' work needs, if they refuse to help, that's when you have to consider going to their manager. Going straight to the MD is never a good idea and can be considered as overkill.

EDIT: The sad thing is that we all get paid to do a certain job, I love building electronics and I'm good at it. But currently my work place has no need for another member of staff with that skill set, so I do what I'm paid to do which is fix computers and servers.

I would just knuckle down, work hard at the job that your paid to do, offer your CAD skills if you think they are asking for it and keep an eye out for a position in that department or with another company.

Going to your MD about this is a no no, it will make you look bad no matter how it turns out.

How about speak to the head of the design/CAD department directly?
You'll get a direct answer of what is required from the person who will interview you should you want a transfer and maybe some good advice.

You havnt read anything ive wrote clearly. Ive already addressed this several times. My manager said its fine to email him, the md offers a stop anytime policy, albeit that doesnt include emails i assume its the same princible as stopping him on the shop floor to ask the same question whixh hes obviously on it for a reason that generally deems him busy. Im not asking for an instant move or to anything outside of my current job roles right now. In actual fact it was the md's idea that i spend 3 hours down in cad which never arisen.
Its just assurance and pointing in the right direction as to what i need to work at that im intrested in. I very much doubt they would put in a requeat for a cad engineer to the shop floor as how many people do you know that generally have these skills that are just working on a shop floor?

The layout of the company is that big the cad offices are in a different building about half a mile away, along with the md's offices which require a keyfob pass to enter
