Help with my home cinema sound foolishness!

My options so far:

1) Thanks to Matblack
Denon 1906 and Canton CD-101 bundle = £649.

2) Thanks to rG-tom
Denon 1906
Gale 3040 Floorstanders (BLACK! which i currently own)
Gale 4050 Centre (can only find maple)
Gale Gold Monitors (can only find maple)
Mordaunt Short MS309 (maple or silver, no black?)

And after delivery that = £730.

What would you go for? Unfortunately my Gale floorstanders are black so it will look abit strange when/if i get all the rest in maple (cant seem to find them in black), so at the moment im leaning towards the first option...but if for an extra £100 im going to have a huge improvement in quality id be very tempted?

hmm, the golds can definitely be had in black as my friend has them

I think it's pretty much certain the full size speaker set up will sound superior to the small sattelites of the canton, the sub will be able to be left to deal with just what i should, instead of having to make up the high lows as the other speakers are too small to produce.

Not sure where else sells the stuff though :/

Oh dear this is going to be very subjective. I'm probably in a better position than many to actually show you the difference between a large speaker set up and a 'lifestyle' arrangement. Whereabouts do you live?

I can tell you for a fact the MS309 is a better sub than the Canton model but the speakers in that set are very good and well integrated. The larger floorstanders will probably sound fuller and the speakers will be able to cope with more depth without cossing over to the sub for the lower tones. Its a tough call and personal preference. The Cantons will be much more 'wife friendly' and take up much less room in your home.

BTW you aren't limited to Canton, you could consider KEF 2005.2 or MS Genie's or any number of other lifestyle sub/ sat systems. I would probably be tempted to go in this direction unless you are going to be playing stuff very loud.

Im basically trying to get myself down to a small amount of options so i can choose between them, which is why im limiting myself to suggestions you knowledgable chaps make :)

Out of interest - i noticed the Denon 1906 has a pre-out for a subwoofer, but isnt this non amplified? Will i need to buy another amp to power the sub? (confused smiley!).

Im in Sussex by the way MB, most members here seem to be from further up north so i assume your too far away!

Actually I'm in Kent.

Most subs are active i.e. have a built in amp, so no need to worry about extra amps, we've spec'ed you for everything you need apart from a DVD player and a screen.

not to confuse matters too much but ive said it before and i'll say it again the logitech z680s sound very good in films and games and are easily powerful enough to fill a normal living room, the key to films is bass and this is where music differs and where the logitechs fall down, the bass is'nt tight or controlled enough for pure music. that would leave you with about 530 to spend on DVD's and CD's.

i went from mission 780se fronts, 760i rears, 75c centre, sony tava8es amp and marantz cd63 to the logitechs and have'nt looked back on film sound reprodution

Rightio, well this is going to take a fair bit of thinking on my part then. Really the decision between the full size and the "lifestyle" setup is my biggest nightmare. I will have a look around for some decent black speakers if i were going to stick with my floorstanding Gales - what manufacturers would you guys recommend?

Its obviously easier for me to go with the Cantons...but as it may well be more rewarding to go with the full size speakers ill take a good look at these before making any decisions.

Im near Brighton btw MB, what side of Kent are you on?

Thanks mate, but i think im really after something that will do everything well - especially music. I do a lot of drumming and a lot of listening to music. Im abit of a perfectionist aswell so if i can go for something that is all round exactly what im after, i don't care too much about the price!

since you already have floorstanders that I assume you're keeping, the rears aren't particularily big and the centre isnt huuuge but could go under your TV perhaps? the biggest problem with a full 'real' 5.1 set up is the floorstanders, and you already have them and can live with them, so i'd definitely be inclined to just add to them rather than doubling up on fronts.

Here is what i have come up with:

Denon AVR 1906 7.1 AV Receiver
Mordaunt Short Avant 905C Centre Speaker
Mordaunt Short 309 Subwoofer
Mordaunt Short Avant 902i Bookshelf Speaker - pair

It comes to around £690 if i price match at a popular audio shop that i could go to after work. Thoughts?

i can vouch that the 905 is a fantastic centre, and ive heard nothing but good things about the other two, i think you're on to a winner :)

Depends how you think the MS will gel with the Gales

MB

Well - theyre all black apart from the sub so they'll look the same

;)

Do you think it would be that noticeable? Im after something ill be proud of, but im obviously not an audio expert so i would assume i wont notice any difference?

LOL, don't bet on it.

I like MS stuff, it performs well for its price point and it looks very stylish in fact I would say it will out class the Gales.

The issue with speakers is integration and this is doubly important with AV as you will get a lot of speaker to speaker pans.

The idea is to get a seemless integration as the sound passes from speaker to speaker and this is not as easy as you might imagine when you use different manufacturers.

I would say, do this if you like the MS and then upgrade to some MS L&Rs once you can afford it and sell the Gales on

Do me a favor though and go and listen to them before you buy them though :)

Roger that, its the main reason im going to go down to the shop rather than get them online. Plus the fact they say they will beat any price (online or off) means i should be able to get a bit of a steal.

Many thanks for all your help, im sure i wont notice much difference MB, but hey, if i do - ill just treat myself to some nice new floorstanders too :)

The place you will notice the difference is when you run some test signals, but the MS floorstanders aren't too dear, the MS309 is a nice sub, I just sold mine :)

Your welcome for the help, its all opinion though. You're welcome to come and have a listen to my rigs if you are in the neighbourhood :)
