I'm in the market for a new PC at the moment and I'm fairly clueless about what's good at the moment. I'm still using the Core 2 Quad Q6600 that I got in 2008 and, other than a RAM increase and some extra HD space, it's still the same spec as when I bought it!
I'm a software developer and want something that I can use for that as well as other general use.
I want large amounts of RAM so I can run local databases and spin up multiple VMs and not have to think too much about it.
I figured I'd go for a reasonably high end CPU too and a graphics card that should do me for a while.
I'm not a massive gamer, but do a bit occasionally and want a graphics card that will support that, as well as being able to try out some GPGPU programming with it.
As is probably evidenced by my current PC being nearly 6 years old I'm not planning on swapping things about in 6 months time so I'm looking for something with a bit of longevity.
I've 4TB of hard disks and a DVD drive in my current PC that will be re-purposed for use in the new one so no additional drives needed there. I've already got an SSD too, but want a second so I can dual boot Windows 7 and 8 on separate drives as I do some stuff that needs Win 7 still.
Anyway, my spec list is below, and some critique on things would be good.
Am I along the right lines with CPU, motherboard and graphics?
One thing that's missing from the list is a CPU cooler.
Any good recommendations about something suitable that will be fairly quiet?
