Firstly I just recently had Virgin media installed - only because we cant get a sky dish. So we're paying through our asses for so called '20mb'.

They installed the net and we have a small cable modem, doesn't have a brand - only a model number. E08C007 - searching google says its an NTL router. It might not be able to cope with 20mb, explaining the 1.9mb speed test results i keep getting.

Also, a friend is letting me borrow an Asus WL-520g wireless router, but I cant seem to get it working with the cable modem. I've connected the two together using an rj45 cable and I can even connect to the wireless network. Even more strange is the fact I cant get on the internet - but I can get onto the cable modem login page by connecting via the wireless router.

I've been scratching my head for a week or so, it's hurting now. Your turn.

turn the modem off, plug the router in and turm the modem back on, seeif that helps, I had the same. I plugged my router into the modem when it was active, and the wireless router just wouldn't connect.

Turned the modem off then turnedit back on and it all worked happily. The modem does cope wth 20mb whether Virgins service can is another matter, here in Manchester evenings get slow, 4 - 8Mbps but overnight the speed shoots up and I can get virtually full speeds.

Tried turning it off a few times and restarting, I'll go try again. I have a feeling its more to do with DNS settings though, as the wireless router can get the cable modem page to load, but nothing external.

I'll go see.

For the Asus router, try setting (cloning) the MAC address of it to the same MAC address used by the network card that your have in the PC that normally connects successfully to the internet.

just to check, you aren't confusing bits and bytes? if you are downloading 1.9megabytes per a second that's about right

I wouldn't be so certain.... I get less that 2megabits most of the time on 20Mb (yes, even from blueyonder game servers). Virgin just have a stuffed network in some places it seems.

If you are getting 2mbit from a 20mbit connection using multiple simultnious downloads (or multithreaded downloads) then you either have a fault or a hardware/config/software issue. Some older routers will not handle 20mbit on the WAN side, if you're using a USB connection then you want to switch to RJ45, try connecting to the modem directly and make sure your lan adapter is capable of 100mbit (sounds daft but you never know).

It's not unheard of for someone to post 'I get xxmbit on xyz isp ...it's rubbish' and then discover they are maxing out the uplink using p2p of some description or someone else on the LAN (if they have one) is.

This is from a brand new modem fitted a few weeks ago. Router is Apple Airport Extreme N (which has the best throughput WAN to LAN of any home router). Even direct connect machine to modem (PC laptop or Mac) gives similar results.
And also, I am not bit torrenting all hours of the day. I use the internet for general browsing, email, work (doing conferences, online training and support) or viewing streaming media.

It is not a reliable service, which is what I need.

I am sick of it, and refusing to continually phone their premium rate line every week. I'm getting out. Sad...it was once a good service, but Virgin have messed it up, and made it an unpleasant (and expensive) experience to try to get sorted.

I know this is not the case for everyone (my friend has just moved into a new (to him) house, had 20Mb service fitted and he's fine).

When things go wrong though, it's not the nice service it used to be with Telewest. I don't trust them to fix it and haven't got the time that is required to continually be chasing them.

turn your modem off for an hour then switch it back on, wait 2 minutes switch router on then then leave for 30 min and it should work then.

Ok ok ppl, all is sorted. Thanks for the responses and advice.

Firstly, I've got over the problem of the wireless router by upgrading to an MSI RG60SE 108Mbs router. Everyone has the net now.

Secondly, im not getting bits and bytes mixed up. I'm getting 1900 bits, or 1.9Mbits. I tested the speed on everyones computer / laptop in the house and all came out the same.

I phoned virgin and they had mistakenly put us on a 2MB service instead of the 20MB service we're paying for!! The contract even says 20Mb and a quick phonecall and they changed it to from 2mb to 20mb in about an hour. I'm getting about 12mbs now / 1.5mbytes a second dependant on server.
