Help With Network :(

Hi guys,

I have 7 pcs currently on my network, 6 of which work all hunky dory and one which is not having any of it. I can surf the net, download from the net, play counterstrike etc...

But i cant use msn, play the sims online and a few other things. My sister who uses the computer said there was a windows error "this computer is conflicting with another IP on the network" or something similar.

Could this be the problem? and how would i go about solving it, i have all the pcs set to "obtain ip automatically, i dont understand why i would choose the same ip as another pc already connected. Could it be conflicting with the printer IP we have on the network?.

i'm not too network savvy but you could check each machine

start>run>cmd>ipconfig /all (works in windows xp)

and note down all the ip addresses allocated

another option would be to switch all pcs off, reboot your router which allocates the ip addresses by dhcp, then switch pcs on again to see if that sorts it

there probably is a more elegant and easier way to do it though - need som e of the clever people to reply ;)

Change the name of that computer with the conflicting IP (my computer > computer name > change). Then ensure the IP is DHCP if you havent been given static IPs (i know u said you "obtain automatically, but make sure its like that on the problematic pc). I'd recommend doing this before you make any further changes. Then i'd check if you have a firewall installed on that pc and if so disable it or permit those ports or applications etc. just disable it;)

If you still got problems lemme know
 
Quite simple, you dont need to rename the machine you simply need to change its IP address it sounds like you have configured each machine with a static IP or used a combination of static and DHCP allocations.

Also make sure your not running two dhcp servers.

if 2 machines are named the same on a network wouldn't their be a conflict? Even if the IPs were different? I mean you could still go ahead and use the machines but i'd of thought there would be a conflict. it was just making sure really to why i suggested the name change. but i could be wrong.
 
As was said above sounds like you need to have a look at your DHCP and your pre assigned IP address. Without seeing all the details its hard but it's easiest to say, set all the machines to be assigned IP automaticly and make sure your DHCP is set up properly

If they were named the same yes. but the original post stated the following

"this computer is conflicting with another IP on the network"

Which is a message displayed by Windows suggested an IP address conflict on the network not a machine name confliction.

how do i sort out the DHCP , sorry guys im a bit of a noob when it comes to networking. Is this to do with my router?. Ive never had this problem before :(

Any help would be appreciated

done all that and still got problems. I can use windows messenger just not the new ones. And as said before i cant print through the network even though it can find the printer and locate it :S

view network connections> right click on 'local area network' > internet protocol (click properties) > "check obtain an IP address automatically" and "obtain DNS server addresses automatically"

thats done on all the pcs. God this is annoying :( . Ive even checked the ip and its different to all the computers. Could it be a hardware problem?
 
Turn off all the PCs

Just turn on the faulty one and see if it works OK now.

If it does then turn on the others one by one and check again after you turn on each one that both are still working.

Continue till it fails or you have all turned on.

If the first test still fails then you have a configuration error of some kind on that PC which needs correcting and the IP stuff is not the mian cause of your problems but may still be an issue so fix the basic problem then retest as above.
