HI Guys.

first time posting , long time reading,

wondered if some of you guys could help me on my new build,
hopefully looking to clock this thing to 3.00/3.20 (gaming and general use)

ok locked in components are

Intel Quad Core 6600 (GO stepping)
Tuniq Tower 120 cooler

so I need advice on motherboard and ram
currently thinking

P5 premium/WIFI (mainly on a certain magazines recommendation, dont need the WIFI though ) or
the Abit IP35 (im a long time abit fan )

as for memory I was thinking DDR2 OCZ reaper ??? ,what speed i don't know, (I haven't built for 3 yrs)

any ideas ??

many thanks.

Michael

Not sure about the memory, but as for the motherboard, i'd save my money and go with the Abit. I'm using one and it holds my Q6600 at 3.6 no problem :)

Ditti on the ABit board. Great board and a great price now the p45 boards are out.

Any decent branded pc6400 memory will do as even at 3.6Ghz you will still only be running your memory at 400 so not even overclocked.

Thanks Guys :)

which version of the Abit is best ???

All good and just depends on the features you want so pick it based on that.

The ip35pro has "better" components to enable better overclocks but the difference is small and only effects getting the last few Mhz from your overclock which will probably only mean something if you have end cooling to go with it.

cool :) Thanks

what about the Pro Xe looks like it has a higher FSB ????

It just means it's "officially" supported. My Abit ip35pro runs at that fsb anyway.

There are a few more options in the bios. If it's not much more money over a pro then get it.

Problem is for the xe money you can get a very decent p45 board unless they have plummeted lots.

The XE is exactly the same as the standard IP35-Pro.

But tbh I wouldn't spend over £100 on a P35 motherboard any more. If you are prepared to spend over £100 then wait a couple of weeks to see how the P45 boards turn out.

thanks for the advice guys,:D

I can certainly wait a few weeks , any P45 boards in mind ??

also would my current PSU power this chip its a Akasa 480W
(currently powering a AMD 64 X2 3800 Skt 939 ,Abit AN8 Fatality with 3 hard drives (one a Raptor) and a ATI X800XL)

also probably going to drop a new Graphics card in there, don't know what though yet (£100 to £150)

many thanks

Well I've just ordered a P5Q Deluxe, but it'll be the w-end before I get to test it. It's looking to be a good board, but I'd rather have first-hand experience.

Which Akasa PSU is it? A Q6600 and a decent graphics card will be fine on a good 480w PSU, but it will need to have plenty of amps on the 12v rail.

The nVidia 8800GT falls nicely into your price range, but both nVidia and ATI are releasing new cards this week, so wait and see what they offer.

sorry about delay cob

box was in the attic LOL

its a Akasa paxpower 460W ATX V2.0

double 12v rail 15A on each rail peak of 16A on each

do you think this will be ok for the setup mentioned?

again many thanks :)

You should be ok with that, tho you should consider buying a new one in the near future.
