Help with new build

Hey gents,

I put together a pretty monster system in 2009 that has managed to last the years of abuse I've thrown at it, but now it's time to lay the old girl to rest and trade her in for a younger model :D

I'm looking for a new high-end gaming machine, primarily for DCS but would also like to be running a bunch of the upcoming AAA titles with all the shiny stuff turned on, ideally a system that will last me 5-6 years without having to upgrade again.

I've been checking out some of the other build threads on the forum here for help/inspiration (shout out to Orbitalwalsh!) and have put together something of a TR4 build below :

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £1,459.51 (includes shipping: £12.60)

I'm looking for advice on RAM, Power supply and Sound Card. I have a >2 year old 980TI I'm happy to keep using for a while, at least until some of the new cards drop in price a little, but I'd also like to pickup a new monitor at some stage so would very much appreciate any suggestions in that area.

I won't be buying everything together, will be picking things up over the next couple of months, and don't mind waiting if there's something new and shiny waiting just over the horizon, so definitely not in any hurry. Am also not 100% committed to a TR build so if someone has an Intel build to suggest, I'd appreciate that aswell!

Thanks :)

Thanks Tamzzy! Definitely happy to wait until the 2950X is in stock, awesome suggestion thanks man :)

I have to say I really like the Asrock board, looks fantastic and much better than the Gigabyte board. Can I ask why you've recommended this over the Aorus? Likewise the Enermax LiqTech over the Be Quiet Silent Loop?

@AeoNGriM

dont have x399 board but x470 so will look a little like this
uw6H1C3.jpg

aorus board has UK RMA and higher VRM amps, Meg is the no1 board though for 2nd gen TR2
if your paying over £100 for a board, id expect to be able to contact the company and have a turn around of under 2 weeks for repair- specially if this is a work related purchase

but if your running 1st gen TR2, taichi or others should be no problem.
Juts lacks Wifi and 10Gbit lan which is a shame for prosumer boards

Silent loop should handle that chip well. Silent Wing 3's are also 3 for the price of 2!
slap a row in the bottom!

Dont bother with a sound card in the Aorus board, has the best onboard out of anyboard- includes a DAC too, even Taichi wouldn't need it

as for ram- samsung B-Die

first of all, cheaper.

secondly, the taichi is a true 8 phase vrm, aorus extreme is a 5 phase+doubler design for the cpu vrms - which is better? probably negligible though

Likewise the Enermax LiqTech over the Be Quiet Silent Loop?
enermax liqtech is specifically designed for threadripper and epyc (server chip). so its coldplate covers all of the cpu.
the other aio coolers may not.

its 10 not 4 doubled ? even older one was 8 not doubled, just like Zenith with has techically the best IR but poor heatsink design .

enermax just has bigger surface area with an aluminum rad- 100% of custom set ups all use Copper, pump flow is useless, small ID tubing and dread to think when you cut the tubing what the liquid will look like after 5 years of uses haha .

tha fans on the other hand are damn good! what actually makes the product half decent !

surprisingly, my 6 year old zalman aio cooler still runs fine.

pump flow as useless
say what?

7 mins in - 8 IR and 3 for SoC on the left

that article was written before baords where on review

@tammy you do know why its listed at 500w yes? its not because of the rad and pump...

a 120mm rad can take 500w ... just depends on the fans you use

I dont quite believe that unit can match a 12v DDC pump for 400 h/l flow...

but again, the fans of the CLC are good! very good - what is the main cost

^^^ but wouldn't trust

looks better

again, those fans! Silent Loop should have always been listed with Silent Wings which is the kicker for me

if think toms hardware as lost a lot of Cred when Tom whom hasnt worked there for a while state so in Gamernexus video with them pushing RTX =(

I'll be at EGX most likely - will see if i can grab Both coolers on any x399 Boards

is 10+3 not 5 doubled site EVEN lists the wrong IR units lol
if its a true 10 phase then that'll be great
although the gigabyte b450 fiasco leaves a bad taste

so what is the correct specs for the aorus extreme?

that's their dumb editor though (even trashing his own colleagues in that piece)

best head to head test

I love the new threadrippers and have been looking at them for a new build myself for gaming however I couldnt justify the threadripper cost over the new i9-9900k & Z390 combo (hopefully announced / released in Oct) or even the 8700k & Z370 out now when using a PC as mainly a gaming rig.

Is there any reason other then the ones below for getting a Threadripper over the new 9000 series?

Want to support AMD and ensure they stay competitive (in my mind the best reason)
Its a dual use rig for profressional use / gaming
You do heavy streaming while gaming (not sure if there will actually make a difference with the i9-9900 with its 8c16t in real use)
Just need crap loads of PCIe bandwidth... for whatever reason.

Thanks so much for all the suggestions @orbitalwalsh and @tamzzy , some really great information here! Based on your feedback I've updated my basket to the below :

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £2,020.46 (includes shipping: £12.60)

I totally agree on the Silent Loop/Silent Wings fans @orbitalwalsh, easy to swap the fans out though yes?

In terms of a PSU, what would you guys suggest?

@tammy

believe US sorted out Taiwan PR after the B450 and Ultra stunt

as listed on Aorus website- US rep even went to state B450 ITX is 4 True digital and listed IR units - indeed Gigabyte had pants down . ASRock also took a hit too, they were as open as Gigabyte were but they got picked out. Also their Z370 boards only run 2133hz with all 4 dims populated - only the Taichi can run 4 dims faster then default
MSI came out Guys BLAZING with X399- 16 phases but had to double to to controller only working with 8 units - someone mentioned that its actually a quadruple chip....

10+3 Digital Power Design
• 50A IR3578 for each vCore Phase & each SOC phase
• Enhanced MOSFET top side cooling by exposed pad
• High current capacity MOSFET
• Lower temperature
• Server level reliability

if your doing content work that favours intel.. I7 8700 non K - if your Gaming and have the money I7 9700K - dont waste on the 9900k

@AeoNGriM

if you are running the Meg... run it with 24 cores at least :p!!!!!!!!!

Seasonic Focus Plus /Prime Unit 1000w . If you've got a lot of cash... Bequiet flagships

Prime and bequiet are tier One PSU, Focus is 1/2

Seasonic has the longer warranty- Both rma handled in Germany though i believe .
Bequiet is Produced by FSP- seasonic rival and is quieter ... Straight 11 is he unique one as there are no internal wires inside the unit which explains the price hike over 10 series

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £785.48 (includes shipping: £12.60)

dont forget the fans !

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £44.61 (includes shipping: £4.66)
if you do reach over your budget, on a 16 core, drop to Taichi @tamzzy recommended ! I thought you were going to rock higher sorry

Believe ASRock and MSI both have RMA outside UK unlike GIgabyte but ASRock are a lot quicker!

If this is just a gaming pc ? then it makes zero sense to go with a 16 core cpu.

true... but all that power but yeah . Maybe OP was looking for system to last a while with mulitcore coding increasing thread out - or just after the kitchen sink .

saves a lot of cash, sound is slightly behind the x399 Xtreme but better then the rest

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £1,266.95 (includes shipping: £14.10)

Hero wifi just behind the aorus for sound , and bios is more slicker but seems Gigabyte redoing it all

Prime PSU that is also Tier one like SP11 but longer warranty

intel 8 core and z390 are week 40-2 launch

Ordinarily I'd agree, but as I'm not hugely short of cash on this build, why the heck not? I'll mess around with benchmarking for giggles and throw some other intensive stuff at it to see what it's capable of. Plenty of overhead for a little bit of future proofing aswell :p

Updated basket :

Anything I'm missing here? I already bought a bunch of SSD's so I got storage covered :)
