Help with new monitor under £170.

Looking to buy a new monitor for my 1st build. Going to be used a lot with xbox so needs HDMI and preferably speakers. Not really looking to spend more than £170. I've been tempted with the Asus VE247H as it seems to fit the bill quite nicely.

Any help is much appreciated

Hi there and welcome to the OCUK forum :)

May I ask what you will mainly be using the monitor for when hooked up to the PC? I ask because at this budget you have the choice between a 23-24in TN panel monitor (best for gaming) or a 23in E-IPS panel (OK for gaming, great for colour accuracy and wide viewing angles).

Also, please bear in mind that any monitor speakers in this range are really poor quality and you would be much better off using a set of cheap separate speakers - like this nice, good value set.
 
The PC will be used for gaming too, and general web browsing and whatnot. Is the Asus I mentioned any good ?

Yeah good point about the speaker situation, will most likely pick some cheapies up
 
There do seem to be some issues with that ASUS in terms of ghosting. Instead, I would personally go with a monitor like this Iiyama. It is well known to be a good gaming monitor, has both HDMI and DVI connections, is a bit cheaper and also comes with some (admittedly poor) speakers.
 
Yeah I have read a few reviews who mention the ghosting. Do like the look of that Iiyama mind! Seems to have everything I need. What is the difference between the E2407HDS and the E2409HDS. Both 149.99
 
They are basically the same monitor - just different casing design, so go for which ever you like the look of best. Don't worry about the difference in the dynamic contrast ratio - as is a meaningless statistic.
 
I think a lot of people here have the dell u2311 e-ips panel type which I got on the strength of it's specs and reputation among existing owners. I think it has now been superceeded by u2312hm.
 
The Dell E-IPS monitors are very nice (speaking from personal experience) and they do play games very well too (they don't have as good response times as the TN panel monitors like the Iiyama - but most people can't tell the difference in ghosting levels).

The only problems may be the price (the U2312HM is £200), the lack of speakers or an audio-out port and these monitors only have a DVI, VGA and displayport video connections. If the OP's graphics card has a displayport output then this won't be much of an issue (as they can use a HDMI to DVI adapter like this to connect up a HDMI console) though he would need to route the sound directly out of the console. If the OP's graphics card doesn't have displayport then one option would be to use the HDMI-DVI adapter alongside a HDMI switch box.
 
I think trying to get decent sound from a monitor is a tall order imho. I would save up and get a basic onkyo set later.
 
Would really prefer something with an audio-out port like the Iiyama in all honesty, and £50 cheaper (on a pretty strict budget) is looking good. Also haven't read anything bad about it yet!
 
Can I ask what this monitor is like for gaming (IIyama Prolite E2473HDS) it seems like its the same as the E2409HDS but just LED backlit and 2 HDMI ports
