Hi all,

I am looking at building a good multimedia PC. I won't be adding a GFX card yet as I'm doing knowledge and won't get time to game will get one in year. So a system with good on board graphics would be good. I have a budget of £450.

I already have

merc alpha case
Samsung pro ssd
1gb hard drive
Win 7
Bluray drive

would like different spec AMD & Intel with pros cons if possible ?

Thanks for any help very much appreciated

A little over budget, but you could always add the after market cooler later.

Processor is quite high end, though may be more than you need currently anyway.

In your position I'd be tempted to go with this:

1 x AMD A10-5800K Black Edition 3.80GHz (Socket FM2) APU Trinity Quad Core Processor **FREE SIMCITY PC GAME** (AD580KWOHJBOX) £99.95
1 x Patriot Viper "Black Mamba" Generation 3 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-17000C11 2133MHz Dual CHannel Kit (PV38G213C1K) £65.99

Better on board gfx, more than capable of general tasks etc.

Well under budget.

Haswell has an improved IGP over Sandy and Ivy.

I'm not keen on the Merc case (only one fan and no USB3) but you have it so not much we can do about that. It would be nice to have a modular PSU in the spec, they make life soooo much easier.

AMD has new GPUs out around October'ish so waiting isn't going to hurt you. At the moment the 7870LEs are AMAZING bang for buck. Being a Tahiti core they are related to 7950s so overclocking them gives similar stock performance. At £160 you can still buy a heatsink for your CPU (£30ish) and when you consider a "Full Fat" 7950 is £240 that's not bad going ;)

Isn't the TeamGroup Higher profile? So will interfere with big air coolers?

That would be my only concern. Great price though. :)

That's exactly why I didn't use it! It is very tall and when Bequiet were giving away a free heatsink with the mobo using that RAM wasn't an option (stulid confirmed that).

For AMD APU builds I have been recently spec'ing that RAM though. It's a silly cheap price for such rapid RAM. APU builds tend to be low budget so aftermarket heatsinks aren't really considered. The faster RAM does help the APUs IGP though so the faster the better.

Well worth pointing the Teamgroup kit out though. Read reviews and the only real con is it's height. If he wanted it he could consider a H60/80 CLC cooler which would fit regardless of RAM. The refurb'd units are cheap at the mo :)

Depends on the cooler used, there are plenty of air coolers that fit with tall ram in slots cloest to the CPU, there are some that fit with the Ram in slots 2+4.

Hi guys thanks for your time appreciated

Couple of things will I need a cooler if not over clocking? If not may aswell go for the better memory. also Will on board graphics be better than an old radon 3500 card I have spare?

With regards to case I may ditch it and get shinobi

Thanks

You can use the stock cooler thats supplied with a retail CPU just fine if not clocking.

The onboard gfx will be better too.

Thanks guys just ordered it

I5 with g87 d3h board and team memory.

What would be the best cooler to buy to fit with this memory and also what are good fans for my case merc alpha? As gonna have a go at overclocking can't be that hard is it?

Also do I have to wear an anti static strap when fitting it all?

Soz I'm a noob lol

Thanks again

I've never used an anti static strap and never damaged a component.

Just occasionally touch something metal e.g. the end of a radiator.
