I am looking to build my first computer from scratch and it will be used for gaming, internet and probably downloading music/movies.

Could anyone give me some advice on the best way to start and maybe some of the best parts to buy on a budget. I am a complete novice.

I am currently using a dell 4600 wich I have upgraded a little but it's getting old and time to move on, the only thing that maybe worth salvaging is the ATI radeon x800 pro graphics card.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

I have been looking at cpus around £145 and graphics cards around £120 and motherboards around £90. Not sure how good a system I couldl get for those sort of prices.

Ok I was thinking round about the £600 mark, I already have a keyboard, mouse and monitor. Not sure what OS to go for but I was thinking Vista 64mb

Something like the above would be good.

What resolution is your monitor?

Thanks Ro55o.
Is there much difference between the coolmaster Elite 330 and 335 because I have seen a 330 with 650w psu for £73.
Is it worth getting a 1tb harddrive, I have seen a samsung spinpoint F1 HD103UJ SATA II 32mb cache for £80.

I think both cases are pretty similar, around the same size, but I'm sure the coolermaster website will show the differences between the 2. What PSU does it come with? I'd try and get a modular PSU, especially in a smaller case, will make cable mangement so much easier. It's not a necessity, just makes life easier :p

A 1tb hard drive is worth it if you need the space, if not then get what you think you would need, 320gb, 500gb, 750gb, 1tb etc.

Sorry I forgot to mention I will not be buying everything at once it's going to be an ongoing project over 3 or 4 months but I don't know if that will make any difference.
What parts would be the best to buy first (obviously the case but after that?)
Sorry if all of these are stupid obvious questions but I am a complete novice.

The PSU is a coolmaster xtreme power plus - 2 x 6pin PCI-express connectors, 3xsata, 20+4 pin (whatever that means)
I think I would probably prefer the larger hard drive so when I come to upgrade this PC then I don't have to worry about it (am I on the right lines with that?)

Would you not be better waiting 3 or 4 months, considering you won't be able to use it until you've got everything anyway? You will find newer components out aswell, which will probably drive the prices of others down etc.

With the larger hard drive, you can get the 1tb one just now if you feel you'll need the space, I know I definitely don't. I've got a 74gb raptor, which I use for my OS. Then I've got a 320gb hard drive for everything else, and still have just under 200gb left :p (everyone is different though, I only have my games and music on my PC). You can always add a 2nd hard drive in later, with the possibility of raiding aswell.

Thanks for all your help Ro55o it's much apreciated and from a fellow Fifer as well.
I was looking to but components as I went along but with what your saying I might just save the money and buy everything in one go and hopefully get a good deal.
