Hi as you can see from my sig below it's been awhile since I upgraded and I have come to the decision to put this rig into retirement.

Now while I have been keeping track of developments with new kit I have never used or even seen any of it in action so I am asking for opinions and advice on the following setups.

basicly looking to either to squeeze extra preformance for similar amount of cash or cut back on stuff that provides no real extra benefit and save some cash.
the rig will mostly be to play games and now and again to watch dvd's any anll advice and opinions appreciated.
Thank you

If it was me..

6300
DS3/650i

Money saved 8800 GTX

The extra cache is not noticable on the 6600 + in my testing. Not in real world tests anyway.

3.4ghz conroe is plenty

The 680i mobo is not worth nearly 200 quid.
I should know I have one.

Not really.

Mobos that cost 70 like the DS3 etc.. have been proven to be just as stable clock further and cost less.

Depends what feature set you need..

IMO.

Well tbh i'm getting married and a house soon so this rig has to last as long as it can so was leaning towards the newer or more high end stuff in the futile hope of some kinda future proofing :)

Spending more does not mean better more faster products.

BTW I have recently found this out lol

the 680i is for example crippled with FSB clocking on the quad cores now for a mobo costing 150+ I would not call that a future proof mobo?

Oh and the 2 x16pci-e lanes we were all told we needed for 8800 GTX in sli is now BS

8800 GTX work just aswell on the 650i which only has 2 8x pci-e lanes with no noticeable perfromance loss.

And its cost 100 quid less.

A 6300 overclocked to 3.4GHz is just as future proofed as a 6600 overclocked to 3.4GHz ;) There will be a few percentage difference but not enough to worry about.

I'd go for the Gigabyte DS4, known to overclock well and for a few extra quid over the DS3, it's got a bit better cooling.

Then splash out on a nice 8800 GTS/GTX.
A beefy power supply that will last you for years to come.
2 Gig of Geil will be fine, but if you're going to Vista (which you should be if you're buying an OS now) you could go for 4gig, with the savings you made on cpu and mobo.

Put it in a nice case too, something like a Lian Li V1000b

Indeed.

You just won't notice the difference :)

Thanks for the help one more quick question could you recomend a power supply that is able to run 2 8800gtx's in sli.
just in case ;)

Listen to easyrider, he knows what he's talking about.

A 6300 (or even 4300) paired with a GTS or GTX will fly, and the 650 SLi chipset is looking the current best buy.

I have that Samsung drive and the P180, and I can recommend both. Also a Akasa Eclipse 62 is a good case.
