Help with PCIe question - 7900XT reported at PCIe 4.0 @ x4

i've noticed my 7900xtx is running pcie gen 4 x8, i run 2 m.2's and a ssd, tried removing all but my m.2 boot drive and like you, my card is stuck at x8, performance seems ok getting decent fps in games and benckmarks, have updated my bios, but because on a custom loop a cpu check is the last thing i wanna do as it'll be a fair amount of work to check. system specs in signiture.

I've tested my card in my son's new PC (R5 7600 based) and it works perfectly at PCIe 4.0 x16 there, so the card itself it fine. I've narrowed it down to either a CPU or motherboard issue. That said, I'm getting what looks like perfectly good performance in game, so I'm not going to do anything now other than be quietly frustrated to myself that it's not working as it should!

weirdly when i had my 4090 the pcie link speed was fine, i god hope my motherboard isnt damaged as replacing that will hurt my wallet and the time to do a full rebuild wont be fun :(
gen 4 x8 is still good enough as its actually gen 3 x16 which is perfect, and like you everything runs ok.

A overtightened cpu cooler can cause all sorts of weird issues with pci-e and memory lanes. Sometimes just slackening off the mounting will fix things. I am not saying that's your problem but it's worth a shot.

"Previous owner" rings alarm bells tbh, I think you found out why he sold it

It was sold by a member here on the MM with decent rep, and either way I'm not too fussed...I got the CPU, Mobo & 16GB RAM for £300. It was a direly needed upgrade from my aging i7 4770K, and for £300 all in I was happy.

If you're using the second M.2 slot, the manual suggests it always takes 8 lanes from the GPU, which seems to be because the board tries to have more PCI-E 5.0 lanes than it actually has.

The OP shouldn't have this problem.

I've tried that, i removed all drives apart from the boot drive which was in m.2-1 slot, but still no joy, tried just that drive in the dimm.2 slot next to the memory but still no joy, card is running in x8 mode, been in the bios numerous times but, cant find what i'm doing wrong, in the pcie setup primary slot is set to auto and second x16 slot has 2 options x8 or raid mode, either one i select does not change the x8 the gpu has got even though its the only card installed and 1 m.2, i'm at a loss tbh

found something intresting, on asus bios's there should be a setting in adavanced called cpu pcie conguration mode, here you should be able to configure all m.2 slots and pcie slot modes, but for some reason no mattewr where i look that particular setting is missing, may contact asus and see if its something that has been missed out by accident during bios revisions?
