Help with poor output

Hi, just trying to get a better output from my rig.

I'm running

2 X Opteron 285's
2GB Corsair PC3200
MSI K8N Master2 Far MB

I've been using the GUI for a couple of months and just let it do it's own thing and have just switched to the console client. I set this up as per the sticky in thsi forum and have also installed the EM111 so i could check my points average.

At the moment with 2 consoles running my average daily points is 255. Should I be averaging more than this?. Or should i just go and get a C2D machine?

Any help is apprecated.

You could install a 64bit Linux distro and use the SMP client... On that system you would be looking at around about 2600 ppd to say about 3000ppd...

But it seems like you have a lot of melts?

Arnt the 285's dual cores? ie you have 4 cores in total?
Although with that rig im sure you are running something important.

255 points is quite low for 2 console clients, although if you have some really crummy WUs then that could explain it.

Try setting the -advmethods flag on one or both clients - instructions are in the sticky. It may help boost your output as there are some tasty WUs around at the moment. It isn't guaranteed though.

Has he got 2 Opterons or does he mean 1 dual core opteron. If the former then yeah, up to 3k sounds about right.

Hi, I do have 2 X 285's, the to that i'm running at the moment are a 2124 and a 1498 cores. I have just looked again and my PPD has gone upto 320.

The 21's are slow

The 14's are excellent

So you have one of the best and one of the worst for ppd

Thought you had 2x dual core cpus for 4 cores. Was about to tip my hat, I've always wanted a dual cpu 940 board and matched pair of 2xx optys.

So you have 1 dual core 285 Opteron.

It looks like you've just had a really bad luck with the WU's.

I nearly built a dual 275 Opteron system for a total of 4 cores.

Do you reckon a well clocked C2D could rival an unoverclocked Dual 275 Opteron system if they were running SMP?

I have 2 X Opteron 285's for 4 cores in total. Not sure if the c2d would outperform. I expected more of a perfomance boost than the one that i have. I started of with 2 x 240 (1.4Ghz) and managed to get hold of the 285's. The next rig will be a c2d i think once i manage to squirrel away some more money.

Is this you? If so that output's definitely pretty low for your system. If you've just been using the GUI for a few months, that explains why your output's been quite low as you were only using one of your CPU cores.

You said in your opening post that you have 2 consoles on the go - if you have 2 Opty 285s then you can safely open 4 consoles and easily double your output. (Or did I read that wrong? What's your CPU utilisation in task manager?)

And joining the best team helps, too :D

Yes that me, i only put the 285's in this week. I will probably put anothe 2 consoles on soon. If i can up the production i could always have 2 console running on the OCuk team.

Is there any way of tempting you to try Linux? The SMP client would give you some pretty fearsome PPD on that system - I reckon about 3000.

Failing that stick the other two consoles on - should pretty much double your output.

Would love to try linux but i've only ever installed linux once. I have 2 Raptors arriving on Monday so i may install it to them and have a try with the smp console. What would be the best version of Linux to use(and the easiest).

Lots of people use Ubuntu. I had a play with it the other day - it seems pretty easy, and you can run it entirely off the CD to try it out before you install it.

If you go for Ubuntu check out the Way To Go Team thread which is lurking in here somewhere. It has all the help Billy gave me installing graphics drivers and the SMP client. [Ignore everything to do with wxWidgets and FahMon though :p]

I am in the middle of compiling it all into one document, along with installation instructions for Ubuntu [I have decided to reinstall as I think I have nerfed something beyond repair]

My God I would love to see the SMP output on that thing. Dual dual core for the win really.

Have you tried overclocking that board, out of interest? Also how can it be socket 940 but still work with 1xx optys?

Edit: man that's an awesome board actually. I really envy you with that system. What was the logic behind a dual processor box then? How old is it all?

Hi,
there was no real logic behind the rig. Although years ago i was reading a magazine about a dual cpu setup and always wanted to build one. I got 2 x 240's off ebay for £50 and that started me off. The boards not too bad, i did want to SLI the thing but have just opted to go for the HIS X1950 Pro and i'm going to shrow in a couple of raptors to see how that improves the thing. I've not tried to overclock the thing at all at the moment, but i'm sure i will. As i said i'll try instaling linux(suse i think as it's the only one i've installed before) and see what output i get then.
