Good Morning,

I know nothing and never pretend to. I’ve had nothing but brilliant help on this forum and stick to what you all tell me like glue.

A year ago I took advice on a mid budget gaming PC and it’s been outstanding however, Starfield on first playing, 10
Mins in started crashing my PC and though I tried a few times and once managed to get 5-6 hours out of the game it’s gone back to crashing. I had thought it was the fan and upgraded to a Thermalright Phantom Spirit 120 which seems excellent however it didn’t solve my issues so I strongly believe it’s the PSU. The spec of the PC is as follows:

I’m thinking of going to a

Gigabyte UD1000GM PG5 1000W 80 PLUS Gold Modular ATX Power Supply

I’ve benchmarked the PC and nothing ever comes up as an issue so would people agree it’s the sensible thing to do?

Thank you all as always for your help!

Adam

600W should be more than sufficient for your rig, so why do you suspect the PSU? Does the PC crash in anything other than Starfield?

Have you checked the Event Logs? (eventvwr.exe) Take a look in particular at the System log.

It’s since started crashing within a few seconds into any game and will crash even when typing in word after 10 mins.

The event logs come up with some generic stuff which when searched would suggest power supply. Nothing was happening in OCCU when testing though.

I’ve got an extra 2tb of SSD along with the other 1tb and both have ample space, and I’ve added correctly an additional 32mb of ram which is clearly over the top, and it’s all the same brand. I will have a look though.
Storage has nothing to do with memtest it checks the lexar ram for errors which would be good to rule out.

That’s why I was honest at the beginning. I shall do as you suggest.

Out of interest, why when I’ve run the likes of Forza on high and ultra graphics would Starfield cause such aggro?
Depending on the resolution and detail settings in game can really stress your graphics card and therefore may show errors if PSU is faulty.

Download MSI Afterburner and monitor FPS, CPU , GPU usage and will give an indication of where your pc maybe struggling.

Were ruling things in and out then whats left is usually the answer :D

Are the drivers up to date?
When did the crashes start happening? Can you remember what you changed on the day the crashes started?
Hi, yes all up to date. I did the usual Google and then Reddit search and that was one of the first things I read.

Nothing was changed. The started playing Starfield and 10 minutes in it was turning off. I tried a few more times and it lasted a little longer and then would turn off again. I managed to play a few other games for a bit but again back to Starfield and the same happened again. That game is the culprit, I’m certain of it. I thought the pc was overheating hence I upgraded the fan but still the same but now turns off without touching Starfield. Tried Oblivion on pretty low settings and even Age of Empires 2 but again it shuts down.

If it's now happening with any type of game then likely a hardware problem. When you say turn off...can you describe it exactly?
Literally turns off in a heartbeat. Not like when you power down, 100% on then 100% off.

Yes literally any game or even if the computer has been left on for say 10 mins whilst I make a cup of tea.

Hmmm. Sounds like something tripping the power supply. If it happens even if the computer is in an idle state then yes my first thoughts would be swapping out the power supply in the first instance.

That was my thinking after lots of digging. It’s a very well reported issue with that game and very often disregarded by those supposedly in the know yet everyone seems to follow the same advice and it all seems to lead back to the PSU but I don’t know better and like to be open minded.

Would you say the proposed new PSU is compatible with my current set up? I believe they are both ATX.

I was trying to keep below £150 and ideally a little lower. I was hoping to look at 1000w for upgrade proofing.
Don't take this the wrong way, but you built a budget PC there, are you really going to buy a £1K+ graphics card? I'd think 750 or 850 was plenty? Your current PC will only use like... ~200-250.
