Help with "Rage" performance

So after hearing about all the problems with rage I decided to download a torrent version to see if it would run ok on my system and it ran fine maxed out at 60fps with the odd dip so I purchased it on steam. the legal steam version runs like utter crap, dropping into the low 20s. Any ideas on what could be the problem

Edit: just validated the integrity of game cache and it gave me this "1 files failed to download and will be required" gives no clue as to what the file is.

Have you tried turning your computer off, then on again?

I have paid for it plus some DLC so I shouldn't have to play the torrent version which has now been deleted anyway.

Are you running the legit version with the same settings as you used on the dodgy version?

Gfx card memory? There is a setting that absolutely rapes fps, think it puts the textures up to 8k resolution or 4k can't remember but it might not be that cause when I had the game installed I kept getting weird ass spikes which I couldn't fix after trying loads of fixes.

There's something to do with caching which might help, try googling it.

I seem to remember when i ran it i had to set the textures to the lowest setting and it stopped the stutter and low FPS.
