I'm using onboard Reaktek ALC1200 (apparantly this version is specific to Asus and doesn't even appear on the Reaktek site - i've had to download drivers directly from Asus).

The problem i'm getting is an exact same issue I had with my old SoundBlaster Live years ago.. basically the only way to describe it, is that the speakers 'turn off' when they don't receive any kind of signal for over ~3 seconds.

This isn't a problem when i'm listening to music, because obviously there's a constant stream of audio, but when short sounds play (e.g MSN alerts, Windows sounds etc), I hear about 1/2 of the sound... the sound will kick in, then i'll hear the quiet hiss of my speakers.. then it'll go silent after 2-3 seconds.

Also, when i'm playing Ac3 material, it totally cuts out any windows sound... although i'm guessing this is normal.

Just getting confused a bit really..... I remember from my old setup.. that i could only get proper 5.1 sound if i used SP/DIF pass through, because my amp doesn't have analogue inputs (only optical/digital coax/analogue stereo). (So i'd only get surround sound if i was playing a DVD really... any games would have been in stereo... my soundcard didnt even support Dolby Digital.. although I don't think that would have mattered lol)

Anyway, the mobo i'm using is the Asus P5N7A-VM, connected via optical out and..... yeah... appreciate any thoughts or advice, it's really starting to annoy me! :D

Thanks!
