hi all

Would appreciate any help. Having had some experience of Sony PSVR I was thinking of going for an oculus or the HTC but to do this need to buy a PC as well. I could go laptop but the hardware is more expensive than desktop.

If I go desktop do I have to buy a screen or can I connect the hdmi out on the graphics card to my LG Oled and use that as a primary monitor? I really don’t want a screen and this Pc will only be used for gaming.

Thanks for any advice.

Josh
PS. Is the experience with either of the above systems better than PSVR

The experience depends on what you want a oculus or vive for. The trumps for both are the room scale and tracking that the PSVR lacks. Obviously you gain the software libraries of the pc platform too. There's every reason not to consider this, but if you don't desire a room scale 360 setup, then ease of access is the Windows MR platform, which will give you Steam.

Thanks all. Never considered the Windows MR platform and know nothing about it. Will head to google!

Why do you need two hdmi points on a graphics card?

Re space in the room I do have a space of about 3m by 3m to play in.

Appreciate the quick responses. Thanks.

Thanks. Just had a demo of the oculus. In my opinion the picture is sharper than what we get on the PSVR at the moment. The climb demo freaked me out! Looking at PCs. Some are coming with the windows mixed reality headset thrown in. I assume this is worth having not instead of the oculus or HTC but as well

Mixed reality is A blown up VR headset in all but name. The difference is the tracking solution they use, and a different motion controller configuration that developers need to adjust, as they do across all 3 currently.

MR uses a front facing setup, that doesn't cover the 360 sphere. I'm not sure, but not unlike the PSVR? with the camera. The tracking though is superior, you get proper controllers, and I think there's some tech involved that sort of tracks your perceived action beyond the scope of the camera. The bonus with all that, is you get mobility, and you don't have to setup either lighthouse or sensors over your room, or up on the walls.

With a 3x3 though, it sounds like your golden and dedicated to it. Ohh and if your demoing units and looking for image quality, by sure to ask them if they're upping the sampling limits. It makes a heck of a difference.

Supersampling is a must IMHO on a 1070 you will get 1.4-1.5 and on a 1080ti you can go upto 2.0 on some games, It really does look like twice the resolution. Which headset should you get? my vote goes for the rift its cheapish, runs better on less powerful hardware because of asw, oculus/facebook are throwing lots of money on games and apps and it shows.

Thanks again for all the help everyone. Oculus has been ordered along with a pc with an i7 processor and GTx 1070 card and 16gb ram. Both are delivered tomorrow.

Best regards and happy New Year.
