I have got a friends pc to repairs he Basicly told me to speed it up as it takes 5mins on the windows welcome screen, it will take around 5mins to load a Word document if it ever does! spec below

Intel pentium 2.00ghz
1gb ram
Windows basic 32bit
500GB 5400RPM
5 users

So far I have run malware bytes and got rid of 300 odd adware Trojans etc.. I have also run ccleaner and defragger and there is no change to speed!

Any ideas of what to do now guys?

Thanks

Yes ccleaner also has a registry cleaner use that too.
Also install peerblock to block random connections to nasty known servers.
Malwarebytes is great, stick with it and scan everyday. Also install Avast free if you are wondering which free antivirus to use.

then goto start menu and run msconfig and delete any startup items that are not needed. but be sure to google stuff you are not sure about rather than randomly delete it for the hell of it.

last of all, whats to stop you reinstalling fresh?

Hassle and data Tbh just reinstalling programs and if I was going To reinstall it would be win vista ultimate, and yes I also agree with the rest of you more ram if deffinatly needed!

Up the ram upto 2GB.
Download Avast Anti-Virus Update it do a boot scan.
Is it the stock cooler?
You could do a very low Overclock like up it by 300Mhz even on stock.
Have you tested the hardware?

Fresh install of Windows would definitely sort it, and if you don't mind a bit of faffing around you can install over an old version of Windows and still retain all the music, pics, vids, etc on it as they will be stored in a folder called 'Windows old'.

If I ever mess up my PC I always reinstall over, put all my files back in their normal places on the fresh install, then remove the 'windows old' folder, defrag the HDD and it's always worked a treat. :)

Perform a fresh install of windows and buying a decent hard-drive will make a big difference to how quick windows boots up aswell as make everything more snappy.

Not for XP though - Vista onwards.

My parents computer was the same. They used to get up early on the morning switch the computer on and go back to bed whilst it loaded up.

Upped the ram and did a clean install of XP and it runs like new.
