Hey all,

Sent the below suggested spec to OcUK for some help but got a reply from Garry Harnett suggesting an ATI graphics card:eek: Needs to be compatible with Nvidia 3D vision! already got the monitor and glasses.

Does anyone have any help ideas.
Is this a workable plan? Is there anything I can swap to for more cost saving?

CPU
I7 -930

RAM
6gb
speed? make/model?

Mobo
GA-X58-UD5

Any opinion on the GA-X58- as that was my choice due to the USB 3/ SATA 3 for future compatability wise.

I am looking to OC it in the short term as well

If you have already spent the money on Nvidia 3D vision and a 3D monitor, then you will obviously want an Nvidia graphics card.

With this in mind I suggest waiting for Nvidia's next generation of graphics cards which come out at the end of the month. No pint buying GT200 based cards at this point, hopefully the pricing for the GTX 470 will be reasonable.

What will the machine be used for mainly?

I assume that gaming will be one of the uses, but will you be putting it through any other intensive applications on a regular basis?

nah tbf its going to be office stuff, sometimes photo manipulation, and gaming. A fair bit of gaming me hopes

I have been offered a i7-975 at a very very attractive price so will prob be going with that as a processor now but need to make sure that the rest of the sys is going to fit in with it

I would go with monkeykings first one but change hdd for a Samsung f3 1tb and drop the i7 930 for your 975
out of interest how much have you been offered it for?

If the price for the 975 is anything more than £250, I wouldn't buy it.

A 930 overclocks to 4GHz just as well as a 975 and a retail 930 comes with 3 years warranty from intel (not sure what warranty you will get with your 975).

Well the 975 is £667 or the 930 is £203.

Its a retail as well but a friend has offered to get it though his trade account so would be the same retail warranty

No need what so ever for the 975 the 930 with a Noctua DH-14 or a Corsair H50-1 will quite easily surpass the 975 or with the £400 get a nice watercooling setup for your graphics card and cpu

In that case get the 930 at that great price. Unless you are doing custom watercooling and plan to overclock past 4.2GHz then there is effectively no difference between the two chips.

cheers, like the advice about spending the spare on watercooling, something I am deffo interested in.

Is this graphics card any good? GX-050-GI this is the only one he can offer me and its only 15 less than OcUK. Should I just get the Glaciator as Monkeyking suggested

just a thought, what will the 975 over clock to?

Depends what you are cooling it with. If you have an H50, a Titan Fenrir or a Prolimatech Megahalems then it should top out at 4.0-4.2 GHz as it will be thermally limited.

That said, the 930 will achieve the same speeds with the same cooling (this bundle is evidence of that).

The 975 is effectively the same chip as the 930, same process, same architecture, same number of cores and threads - the only differences are that it has an unlocked multiplier and it is likely higher binned - so it may be able to achieve higher maximum overclocks. Not worth £300+ IMHO.

Also, bear in mind that the 975 is EOL (end of life) now as the i7 980X has been released. This is a fundamentally different chip as it is based on a 32nm process, 6 cores/12 threads and generally awesome. However, in gaming there is no benefit getting this CPU over the i7 930 (or for that matter getting the i7 930 over the i5 750).

yeh, when u put it like that i completely understand what u mean with the no benefit of getting it and yeah i dont think it is worth the extra 300 now
