Hi guys.

So firstly, I am not the most confident with computers as some. I've done my basics, upgrading a GPU, Memory, even changed my Mobo and CPU (But I had a lot of help from a friend there, as it was the first time, haha)

But now I'm looking for a new test. I'm going to SSD. And also, changing my OS at the same time. So here's what I'm asking -

I currently have two HDDS, one 500GB and one 1TB unit. I currently have Windows 7 on the smaller of the two. Essentially what I'm looking to do is to pop in my SSD, and install Windows 8.1 to it. Not to get side tracked. But I know there are a lot of you out there that may think going to Windows 8.1 is a bit of a bad move, but I'm actually very drawn to it! Anywho. So I'm basically looking for an idiots guide to the best way to do this. So far I'm thinking it's best to just take out my Windows 7 drive (everything is backed up onto my Seagate external anyway), then put in the SSD and install all my drivers and obviously, 8.1, to that, making sure it's the boot drive.

As I say I've never really done this - so any tips, advice would be great. I guess I'd kinda like to keep the 500GB free just in case, but I guess leaving Windows 7 on there would be a plus, incase I manage to completely balls it up.

Sorry for being a noob guys. Also, if anyone knows, how long roughly does it take for 8.1 to install onto an empty drive?

Thanks!

You've pretty much got it spot on. Remove your 500gb, connect your SSD and install Windows. The installation process take 20-30mins. You could always duel boot Win 7/8 if you feel you need it.

Oh really? Wow, go me!

Could do. Can't imagine I would, I'll keep it to one side somewhere just in case, then I imagine it'll become extra storage!

Thanks!

You don't have to take out the old drive with Win7 on it. You could just install the SSD and change the boot order in the bios to make the SSD first - install Win8.1 on that and away you go.

Always disconnect other drives before installing Windows. It's better to be safe than sorry.
