Help with Temp readings for Conroe 6600

Hi Everyone,

I have just successfully upgraded my rig to Core2 goodness, I have the following:

Asus P5B Deluxe (wifi) Bios 1004
Conroe 6600
2gb Corsair DDR800 6400 (4:4:4:12)
Tagan 580W

My problems encountered so far seem to be ones that quite frankly I didnt expect from such a decent bit of kit.

For example, upon installing windows and all my usual crap on there I noticed the sound was crackling from the speakers, an updated driver from Asus seems to have solved this.

Secondly, navigating between folders seems to be slow and laggy, I simply dont have the fluidity I had with my old Athlon 4400 X2.

Thirdly, the temperature of the cpu with the side panel off runs at a nice 34C, Arctic Silver 5 was applied to the stock cooler (paper thin layer on cooler and then a to the centre of the cpu, sized of a single grain of rice) however, with the side panel on it runs between 43-47C idle! Is this typical? Bearing in mind that I have a Coolermaster aluminium case. I am also using the Asus Ui utility to give me the readings.

I wish to overclock to at least 3.0GHz if possible so with idle temps that high, can anyone advise me what I should be looking for temp wise, obviously the lower the better but as a rule of thumb what is typical?

Is there a nice easy guide to ocing using a Asus P5B...and will my memory be able to do this? I am confused as to the FSB 1:1 ratio and what this means.

Lastly, do Conroes run better at 2T or 1T?

Thanks for any help,

emissary

1T is fastest, but only if your memory can handle it and still remain stable.

Use TAT (Intel Thermal Analysis Tool), or Coretemp to get the real CPU temperatures.

I assume you cleaned off the intel gunk before putting AS5 on the heatsink... it does take a couple of days for AS5 to bed in, but my chip idles at 37, with a Zalman 7700 AlCu, with the fanspeed set on LOW, which is a very quiet cooler, but not the most efficient. Your temp seems a little high.

However Idle temps are not really important, load the CPU to 100% and then see what the loaded temps are.

Which coolermaster case is it, and what case fans do you have. It does sound like you have airflow issues for the temp to jump from 35 to 47. I have two coolermasters, one is a very old very nice, with 2 intake, and 2 exhaust fans. CPU's love this case.

But my other is an ATCS 210, looks pretty with a green perspex front panel, but it has 2 exhaust fans, and no intake at all, no vents either, the only way air gets into the case is through cracks between the panels, and through the front usb sockets!. Cpu's roast in this one :(.

Load temp up to 70 degrees are 'hot' but acceptable. But lower is better. The chips 'max' temp is 85, so going for 70 gives you a bit of headroom to make sure you dont overheat come a hot summers day.

Hi Corasik,

Thanks for the reply. Regarding the temps, With the side panel on the temps go from 43 - 47C. I will use the suggested applications for temperature monitoring.

My case is a Wavemaster with 2 intake fans and 2 at the back, but I only actually have 1 at the back at them moment.

I will use Prime95 to stress the pc for a few days and to see how it copes, my worry is when i come to oc it, it might get really REALLY hot given the current temps.

Can you carify the fans, you say it has 2 at front and 2 at back, then say you only have 1 at back at the moment... do you have none at the front? Or two etc.

I would certainly recommend adding the second fan at the back, as the faster you can get the hot air out of the case, the happier your cpu will be :)

Just one thing. If you're serious about clocking it to 3Ghz, at least splash out around £15 on a decent cooler. Arctic Cooler Freezer 7 Pro does the job and it's _CHEAP_!

With the stock HS&Fan I was idling @ 55degrees with me 6300 clocked at 2.4, with the Freezer 7 Pro and my 3.1Ghz clock it idles at 42ish and doesn't rise above 60 under 100% load.

Seriously, it's cheap and well worth it and it should be able to handle more than 3Ghz if you wanted to.

oc.
