Help with this bizarre problem, if i shut my computer down it restarts automatically.

Simple enough to explain, if I pressed shut down right now, the computer would go off as any would normally, then two or three seconds after all the components power down, it magically turns itself on again - so I have to resort to waiting for the system to power down then flick the switch at the back of the PSU to prevent it from starting up again.

If I do that and then in the morning turn the PSU on, it will not automatically start up - it will wait for me to press the power button.

Now, I've looked around BIOS at possible answers to this question, but cant find any!

Anyone had the same problem? Hope its something pathetically simple to fix!
 
I have the same damn problem, I gave up trying to fix this for nearly a year now :o< if ya find a way to sort it, telll meeee >_<
 
Maybe the shutdown button has somehow changed path to the restart path?
Try making a new one:
right click desktop, new, shortcut
copy/paste this into the 'location of item': C:\Windows\System32\shutdown.exe -s -t 00 -f
hit next.
 
I had the same problem too. In the end i tracked it down to my PS/2 keyboard. Try using a usb keyboard instead and see if that helps.

Sadly not, I have reformatted serveral times (not just for this issue)

Every time I press shutdown it says "Windows is shutting down.." and every time i press restart it says "Windows is restarting..."

I have exactly the same problem, and am lost as to what to do next.

If you try to sleep your computer does it power down then come straight back on with a black screen (basically crashes)?

I have tried reinstalling drivers for graphics and sound card, also tried reinstalling the intel chipset drivers. With no luck.

System restore did not fix it either.

Is rather irratating.

This has only occurred to me when the computer has frozen or for some reason not shut down correctly. I have now corrected the reasons for the computer freezing and do not have this issue now. Search in windows help for auto restart and try to disable it.

What OS are you using?

I have seen problems on other users PCs using XP. The problem was due to the system crashing on shut-down, and XP will automatically restart in the event of a system failure. Unfortunately the cause can be for various reasons, but usually (in the problems I have seen) from corrupted drivers.(drivers found in XP usually in the hidden device(Device manager-> show hidden devices-> non-plug and play drivers) directory.

You could try disabling the auto restart feature for system failure, which will narrow the problem down to windows actually crashing on shut-down, then a case of finding the problem driver.

Mine was in win7 ultimate, the issue was amd 10.10 graphics drivers, a full uninstall of the driver, deleting amd/ati folders and a reinstall of the drivers solved the freezing issue and the restarting.
 
How would you repair the problem if it was a BIOS issue? My brother is having this same problem every time he turns his computer off...
 
What make is the psu? Because I had this and that was a sign that it was preparing to die. Eventually you may find you wont be able to turn it back on again.
 
These may be a noob answers but what the hell; could it not have anything to do with the PSU? Why not try another one to be sure? Also it is possible that the "pin" or wire that connects the power/restart button on your case is in the wrong port on the motherboard or faulty?

I'm curious now could the cables in the wrong pins affect this? If so then I probably ballsd it up
 
Apologies for the delay, but I think I have my computer turning off and sleeping as normal...

I took the little battery out of the motherboard for 10 minutes (CMOS reset possibly) and all appears to be fine now

We shall see though

Wouldn't have thought this would have been the problem but I guess its worth a shot :)
