Help with turning avi to dvd

Hi all

Was hoping someone could point me in the right direction here, How do i turn avi video into dvd format or at least something i can use on a dvd player? My dvd player says it'll play pretty much most things but apparently not what i put into it

I've only tried burning the dvd using windows media, i dont have nero (the original disc wouldn't work)

I went with DVD Flick in the end. Works a treat so far and easy to use even for a total noob like me!
