Help with upgrade please

So I gave the set up in my rig to a family member but as my laptop is on the way out I have kindly been given it back :p

Think I need an upgrade. I play football manager exclusively on PC format so as far as I can tell I only need to upgrade the single SSD to dual SSD's in raid and maybe bide my time on the MM for a GPU upgrade.I'm hoping that my motherboard is future proof enough to satisfy the upgrades as I can't be faffed with doing that I may as well sell the rig ad get a new set up.

Any and all suggestions welcome please. Had a brief look and there are some cheap Crucial SSD's on Overclockers. Don't want to go below 200gb in size and my max budget would be £200 for the harddrives and as I say the GPU can potentially wait for a good deal to pop up and spend more at the time.

I would get a bigger SSD and then get a new GPU, rest of the PC is fine.

I am using a I7 950 @ 4ghz for gaming and have no issues at all, got a 250GB SSD as well along with a new GPU and it does me for gaming at 1080P

a few SSDs -250GB

bigger SSD's - 500GB

a few are on the "this week only" offers as well, depend on what games you play your GPU isn't too bad, I am running a Radeon HD 5830

Erm ok maybe some confusion here.

I want to purchase 2 x SSD with a minimum capacity of 200gb to raid in my existing build. I want to know what peoples advice is regarding if they think this will be the best way to go about upgrading since I only play Football Manager and a GPU can wait for a while.

My budget is £200. This, again, is to purchase 2 x SSD. I'd like advice as to peoples opinions on the current SSD options I have within my budget and to advise me as to whether these upgrades are possible with my current board etc.

Any reason you want to raid the SSDs? Is there a task you intend on doing that benefits raiding SSDs? It just seems like you're adding more risk than it's worth by doing for for what would amount to, realistically, minimal performance improvements being noticed in real world use.

Personally I'd get a 500GB SSD and a large HDD for regular backup images. SSDs are not fool proof, they can and do fail so having an image on standby to clone on to "should" the worst happen 6 months down the line is peace of mind.

I would stick with the one SSD or if you want two SSDs keep them as separate as I had my Samsung evos 840 in raid for a few days but I didn't notice any improvement over using them as single drives.

and I also couldn't do any firmware updates etc on the drives as it was showing as a intel drive which was the raid controller

only way you would need them in raid is if your moving large amount of data or doing a lot of processing.

Thanks for the advice guys :)

So I guess my options are to buy a larger sized SSD and stick a good backup drive in for a ghost image as well as further storage, which is fine, but as I kind of want to future proof myself for the next few years with my next purchase would I be better off selling this rig and upgrading mine to see the benefit of having a board capable of 6Gb/s etc?

That's with me assuming I'd be able to get close to £400 for my existing set up.... Optimistic?

No apologies needed I was being genuine. I didn't know that was possible :)

I was going to go for the Crucial as it's cheap but as I'm now happy to use my £200 budget on one SSD are there any recommendations?

Hi, not trying to butt in but i am wondering why you do not get as much for your money as possible.

With £200 you could get the Sata Controller card that Lemin has suggested, a smaller 120GB SSD, still plenty big enough for both windows and some games.

I have a 120GB SSD, it only has windows on it at the moment, so i still have nearly 70GB free.

Then you could also afford to get a brand new GPU as well.

Sata Controller Card £30
128GB Hynix SSD £50
Powercolor R9 270 £114

*i did look in the clearance section but the cheapest good card was £140.

**just realized that you already have an SSD, is it a Sata 6Gps? If it is why not get a 120GB just for the games?

You're not butting in at all the more the merrier :)

The only games I play on PC are Football Manager and the occasional dabble into Civ or something similar. For Football manager I have a load of kit, face and logo megapacks so I liked the idea of a larger drive.

Also, as far as I can tell, my 5870 will do just fine for the month or so it will take for me to get another £200 - 350 to upgrade my GPU and RAM.

Memory wise I was thinking I would just get a better clocked set and that with the GPU upgrade and the SSD's in should see my requirements met for the next 3-5 years?

Yeah this isn't a bad idea whichever way I go. I can just keep the OS on my original drive and use the other one for games etc :)

All good.

A 5870 must be way over spec for Football Manager !
I also think you should just use your existing ram imho.

You would think so haha. I haven't yet moved onto FM15 but the demo itself runs my i7 laptop with an amd gpu to the max and thats with only one league running so it seems like it may be a little more demanding these days :(

Good to hear the RAM may not need upgrading. Maybe I'm over thinking this haha
