Does anyone know why my wireless speed is only 5.5Mbps

1, 6 and 11 are non-overlapping channels so you may wish to try 6.
back to 5.5Mbps on channel 6
jumping 52mbps to 74 to 130 and back on channel 1

Any idea what could be causing this as it only seemed to of started doing this in the last few days

Do you have an android phone? Download WiFi analyser and see what your neighbours networks are on.

Could be as simple as one of them has a new router and it's drowning out the signal from yours.

Lots of other nearby routers set to “auto” channel which is supposed to make them select an empty channel, but usually results in routers bouncing all over the place constantly trying to find an empty channel which is terrible for throughput.

There’s a number of Windows application which let you monitor the WiFi spectrum around you and then select the least used channel.

Remember that 2.4GHz has the best range, but 5GHz has more channels and better throughput.

Put it onto channel 6. 1,6 & 11 are the only true non overlapping channels, you're not doing anything clever using 7 or 9.
Try 802.11n (only)
Change your encryption to WPA2-AES (only as sometimes WPA can half rates)

Also rates will fold back when you aren't really pushing it so there's a likelihood you're doing 130 across all channels, it's just you're not seeing that figure reflected.

Do you have any 802.11b devices on your network? The WLAN will run at the speed of the slowest connected device.

And if you’re interested in your data security, you might want to get off WPA encryption and move to WPA2. WPA was cracked in 2008 or something and it’s no longer regarded as secure. For a home user it’s not that vital, but it’s still not as secure as it could be.

I got so many things that been connected by wireless (it lists about 40) I lost track if any of them is 802.11b

That’s critical. Steveocee has suggested the answer to your problem, which is to only allow 802.11N clients, which should run at 150Mbps (75Mbps actual maximum data transfer speed).

And picking 1,6 or 11 is also critical because they are the only 3 non-overlapping channels. Anything else is guaranteed to slow you down because of inter-channel interference.

Wireless routers will slow down to the speed of the slowest connected device.
If you have 40 devices connected, firstly that about twice too many for a lowly 2.4Ghz AP but secondly if one had bad signal and is in use it will slow everyone down.

If you have the option try a minimum RSSI of -75, this may cause some devices to drop off BUT if speeds increase then you know what is causing the issue and you can work from there to improve it.
