Help with WOL (Wake on LAN) - Asus P5E-VM HDMI

I would like some advice regarding WOL, I have an Asus P5E-VM as my Media PC and I have just set up Remote Desktop which works fine via my dynamic DNS server.

The next stage was to set up WOL (Wake on Lan) as I didn't want to leave the PC on 24/7.

I have made progress and it does work but It seems I can wake my PC minutes after going to sleep fine but if left for any length of time like overnight I either find the PC has come on on its own or I can't wake it up via the internet.

I have been in the BIOS and not quite sure if my motherboard supports WOL fully, It has APM options for "PCI" "PCI Express" "Keyboard" "Mouse" etc. But nothing which says Wake on LAN. It Enabled "PCI" as even though my Ethernet adapter is on board it still says its PCI in the device manager.

I am currently using the Magic Packet method set up in Windows 7 in the device settings, other methods like pattern chance just seemed to make the computer wake up seconds after sleep.

I have the Mac address set up and the right port forwarded to the machine which is now on a static IP address from the router.

Does anyone have any ideas for me? I am kind of at a brick wall at the moment.

Whilst I dont have the same motherboard as you on my ASUS I enable the wake by PCIe event option (I think thats whats its called).

Now on windows device manager, make sure your Ethernet adapter advanced properties "wake up capabilities" has only selected "Magic Packet", "pattern match" must not be selected.

I did not enable Wake from PCIe as I thought that was related to the graphics card. It is already ticked for Magic Packet only too. I can try it later but like I said in my post it does work but only for a limited time and then the PC seems to loose the Ethernet link while in sleep mode, even though I have turned off power management on the Ethernet controller.

After some tweaks yesterday everything seems to be working as expected, I can even boot the PC remotely from cold or from sleep. The problem is if left overnight nothing works until PC is manually woken or booted.

Any Ideas?

It is likely that your router is "forgetting" about your PC. You need to add a static arp entry for your PC, at least that what I had to do with my bog standard o2 router.

Hhhmm, I assume that "arp entry" is something else other than just assigning the PC a static IP which I have already done.

If so where do I do this? In the router config? This is a Sky Router I am using if that makes any difference.

Edit - Just to note the LAN Light on the router was still on this morning which in the past has gone off after a few hours. Still no wake though!

I'd imaging the sky router is very similar to the one I had.

I think that arp stuff basically comes down to how the router knows where to send stuff. The o2 router removes all dynamic arp entries after 15mins of the device not being turned on.

To add a static one I had to telnet into the router and log in as the SuperUser account. I got the instructions via google, I'm sure there will be some for your router too.

Does the PC LAN light also remain on when the PC is off ?

What are you using to wake it up.. is it a mobile phone ?

Yes the LAN light stays on when PC is off and/or sleep.

Yes I am using a mobile phone on 3G to wake currently as its the quickest way to do it at the moment. You can even see all the LAN lights flash when I send the Magic Packet, its just not getting to the PC.

I think geuben is right, after doing a bit of reading in the last hour it seems that the ARP table flushing is causing other people to have the same problems.

Unfortunately I can't find anything relating to ARP on my router. Some say using a custom firmware can help but I don't really want to have to go down that route.

Are you looking at the settings in the web interface? I know with mine there is no mention of ARP stuff. It's only available via the command line interface via telnet.

Thanks, I will have a look into this. Is it easy to do, generally?

Yes web interface, my knowledge in this field is not that good, I am learning everyday. Not even heard of telnet etc until today! hehe

Can you give me any pointers on were to start?

I just tried googling for "sky router static arp" and nothing jumped out at me, try using the model number of your router in the search instead.

Yeah I tried that, hehe. I don't have that info on me so I will have to check when I'm at home, sure I have looked before and there was no info on the router! I may be wrong though, got to be something somewere!
