Help! Wont boot to windows after upgrade!

Just installed a H80 and 8320 on an Asus M5A97 evo r2.0 but it wont boot to windows. I can get into BIOS fine.

I did **** up first time round by not connecting the h80 to the CPU fan header so it wouldn't boot and gave me a BIOS warning. Connected it but noe goes to a windows couldn't start screen. If I select start normally it loops back to the same screen. If I run windows repair it can't find a solution. Help! :(
 
I think that board has a Memory switch to cycle through different ram presets. If the red light is flashing when booting it means there is a ram problem. You should boot it up, but use a pencil tip (or something thin) to hold the switch next to the ram for a second or two. It'll then start cycling through different ram presets until it finds one it likes.
 
It does have a 'mem check' button. I did have the ram in the wrong slots to start with too actually.

So boot then hold then hold the mem check button until something happens?
 
im still learning about custom built computers but what bios are you on? as i know you have to upgrade it to after bios 1006 to use that cpu as i was going to get the same mobo but i had no way of updating the bios at the time
 
Oh really? That's interesting I didn't know that.

How do you find out which bios version you're on and how do you update?

(I'm new to this too, as you can tell :D)
 
i read somewhere that there is a sticker on the motherboard and the last four digits on the sticker is the bios that your mobo is running (unless you flashed it which obviously you havent) im not sure how you find it in the bios as ive never had a asus board so cant tell you exactly where to look (im sure someone could help you if you want to check that way)

So my plans for tonight are to

1. Flash bios update

2. Reset CMOS

3. Use the 'mem check' button

4. Smash it up with a big hammer.

With checks in between to see if it's worked obviously.

Another question, when preparing the USB drive for the bios update, do I unzip the contents, or leave it zipped?
 
One last question (he says), so is the general consensus that is an issue with the board/hardware/bios rather than windows itself that's causing the boot loop?

On a completely separate note, man those H80s go hell for leather on start up! Nice and quiet once settled down but nearly woke the baby a few times last night :D

This. You're doing a big jump from moving chipsets, and it's quite likely you will run into driver conflict problems which can cause Windows to not boot. It's always recommended to do a fresh install when changing motherboards to avoid this.
 
Ahhh. Did not know that. Have just plugged it all in and hoped for the best so far :D

Sounds like I've noobed it then :D

Does it need to be a full wipe? Will it just wipe the OS partition? I won't lose the rest of the data on the 1TB drive?
