if you rest a hdd on top of anotherdoes that "break it" (using a diffrnt term there).....one is saying disc error and the other dosent load "owt" and i put my old hdd with the new one ....now i cant load up or reinstall ....

just recieved a txt of a friend saying this.... anyhelp guys and gals .... and it also doesnt help HIS MOBILE IS OFF!!!!!!! all i know is that he has a 160 gb maxtor thats an ide and his old 1 i think was an 80 gig again ide ..... i think hes put the 80 gig as the master so hence it dsnt work.... since its from another system .....but as i am not sure please help and reply =D

It shouldn't break it per se but it isn't a good idea to rest hard drives on top of each other because they are electromagnetic devices and also because they spin will cause vibrations.

I suppose you won't know but if he tries them independently what happens? Are they recognised in bios or Windows? It may be that you are right and he is trying to boot off the wrong drive, if it doesn't have the requisite drivers then it won't work, although he could try a Windows repair and see if that has any effect.

Ive tried windows repair.... nothing

it all is recognised in bios.... the first boot up is ok, the memcheck is ok.

one hdd says system disk error (but is recognised in the bios)

the original hdd gets to just before the windows screen and then it just doesnt do anything....

ive put the 2 hdd's in another computer still nothing, ive put each one in a different master and slave mode... nothing... swapped the jumpers and nothing.

it seems to get to the point where it loads up windows and crashes. and the other hdd that is clean already just says system disk error.

i tried the windows recovery cd on both and it cant load up any startup installation files that are needed to continue the recovery... so nothing happens...

any idea on any other possible solutions.. or is a new hdd in order? :(

need help on this... basically i need to know.. do i need a new hdd?

yeah putting HDDs ontop of eachother could easily Bjork it as ther is a circuit borad underneath and the top of the one below is metal....
If the PCB has shorted you might well need a new HDD. though sometimes if it's the low voltage bits that short you can just remove the short and it's ok.
