Well i recently set up a new PC for somebody, and after a few driver niggles it seemed to be working fine so i left them to it. But i just got a ring from them saying that whenever they use the home phone it kicks the computer offline. I don't see why this is happening, i just replaced their ADSL filter and the modem is the SpeedTouch 330. Ideas?

One thing i did notice though is that connecting to the internet only worked by selecting 'dial up', when there was another option. This was in the Vista 'Connect to a network' window, and i don't know if it's just because i'm not used to using a wired connection or if the modem is faulty. Thanks for your help :)

Faulty filter is all I can think of, or some other unknown fault with their internal wiring.

Why are you punishing them with the frog anyway? Most ISPs will give away a router these days, get that problem sorted.

It's a brand new filter, so i doubt that's it. Was so much clearer on the line than the old one. It worked before though, so i don't see how it would be the wiring.

I used the modem because they already had it, it works and it's all they need. The PC is right next to the phone socket so wireless is pretty pointless really. Bit of a hassle getting Virgin to get them one anyway...

The frog needs to be told to "dial up" to work, though it's not actually dialing.
Caged's right. The Frog's bloody awful and Virgin will give them a router for nothing. It's nothing to do with wireless (they could switch that off if they wanted) - the router will be faster, a lot more reliable, won't need to be told to "dial", won't need drivers nor any other messing about.

Brand new electronics can quite easily be broken. Presumably you've tried with the modem at the master socket to make sure it isn't their wiring?

Since it worked before in the same socket i'm almost certain it's not the wiring. Probably is the master anyway. Tried it with my 330 and it's exactly the same.

So yeah, next step is probably to get a free router. Thanks.

If the broadband drops when the phone rings it's 99% a filter issue. The things are cheap and nasty, it's not totally out of the question that the new one is broken also. Borrow/buy another one and try it out.
