What are the rest of your pc specs ? What make and wattage is the power supply too.

More info you add easier for us to try help you.. ;) also have you tried the other ports on the graphics card ... eg the DVI ?

XFX Radeon HD 5850 System Requirements

* PCI Express or PCI Express 2.0 compliant motherboard with one X16 graphics slot
* 500 Watt or greater power supply with two 75W 6-pin PCI Express® power connectors recommended (600 Watt and four 6-pin connectors for ATI CrossFireX™ technology in dual mode)

Then it shouldnt even power up.

Also checked a few psu calc's and found that with my setup, the total should be around 390w at full load so that cannot be the problem surely?

Fair enough mate, i really dont profess to know a lot about power at all. I only quoted the manufacturer site, if i was buying I'd ensure i'd of followed that rule from the manufacturer site, though.

But tbh, i really dont know much about power.

Okay the XFX ATI Radeon HD 5850 has 2 power connectors and the power supply you are using only has 1 pci-express power supply so guessing you did use the molex to pci cable in the graphics card box and plugged it into the 2nd power connector on the graphics card ?

Also to add hearing fans spin up does not mean that it's powering up right by the way... The fans spinning and no signal in most cases means you forgot the power cables to the graphics card or the PSU just is not capable of powering up the system right.

Dont have a bloody clue! I remember 1 slot connecting nicely and the other, well the pamplet told me not to do, something about 2 6pin to 1 8 pin or something like that.

You need to have both 6 pin pci-express power cables in the card, there is a molex adapter to pci-express in the graphics card box (if not you will need to buy one and try again).

It should look something like this in the graphics card box the cable you need to power up the 2nd power connector on the graphics card. (MAKE SURE both power cables are in the graphics card one will come from the power supply and the other you will have to make up with the supplied adapter, If both are not in... it wont work)

EDIT

Had 2 in the box, and used 1 to connect the psu to the gfx card even though the little pamphlet in the box from xfx said this is a bad connection!

okay make sure there is 2 molex (white ends) connected to the power supply adapter and then connect the black 6 pin end into the 2nd power connector on the graphics card and make sure the 1st power connector is plugged in too that comes from the power supply.

It's not a bad connection, I think you are not understanding what it means or the leaflet is really wrong .

**sigh** you have to love user manuals that talk utter rubbish.... and why would they supply the adapters and tell you not to use them ? It should say "we don't recommend doing this, but it may work if your power supply is good enough" ..

okay anyway if you don't feel comfortable following my advice and trying what I said above you will need to buy a new power supply with 2 pci-express power cables on it. Atleast we now know why you have a problem :).

I rate this one btw for your needs. It's cheap and gives you a future update path with its 600watts and 2 x 8 pin pci-express power (or you can make them 6 pin by unclipping the 2 not needed).

w1lliam try the molex to pcie connector and see if that resolves your issue?

Also, the antec truepower that dissy linked to is awesome for the price. I have one btw...

Strange that it's the GPU manual saying this though, as it's usually the GPU which provides the adaptor (last 3 cards I've had has provided them, 5870, 5970 and GTX580)

Exactly... Tells me a lot that manual about XFX... (Happy never had to buy anything from them now :D).. I think they are just playing safe but the manual should have stated it is not recommended on poor power supplies, but if you have a branded rated supply it's worth a try.

I disregarded the leaflet when the pc didnt start then got out the molex cables that they supplied and went to town connecting them to the psu and the other end to the gfx card. So now am stuck with everything running but no signal to the monitor and this is when i decided enough was enough and reset everything. And then posted my problem in the OP.
