Hello everyone, i'm desperate for help, or rather, confirmation of my diagnosis.

Problem started this morning. Computer was fine, then suddenly black lines appeared around screen and mouse cursor. Screen froze, i had to press restart button. On restart, computer posted/booted as normal, but when the windows logon screen should have appeared, instead the screen turned blotchy black/blue and nothing happened. No mouse. just a half black/blue screen. Now, i left it a few hours and nothing has changed.

My suspicion is graphics card.

I'm able to login via safe mode and VGA mode which i'm in now. In VGA mode i can get to login screen and login fine, but it's in 640*480. As soon as i change the resolution above 640*480 the screen dies again/turns black. Also, when in VGA mode, there are thin black lines across the middle and bottom of screen.

It must be the graphics card right?

I'm running windows XP SP3 with athlon 64 3200+, 2gb pc3200 ram and Nvidia 8800gts.

Any help is appreciated.

Hmm, does sound like a GPU problem, does your motherboard have inbuilt graphics and is it possible to test your old one in another system.

The Only thing you can do and the post above says is run your board on onboard graphics and see if that changes anything, or test your gpu in another system.

I don't have onboard, i'm on a LanParty NF4 ultra-D.

I don't have another system to test in.

But i do think i'll try to clean off the drivers and see if that changes anything.

Someone suggested it could be a fault RAM chip on my GPU. If wiping the drivers doesn't help, i'll pop to my local CEX tomorrow and pick up a cheap GPU to test.

Thanks guys.

Ok, I completed a driver sweep, tried to install new drivers and the installation failed. I then installed gpu-z and here are my results -

Surely a final comfirmation of my suspicion?
