Heretic

For some reason I thought this was going to be a video game adaptation

Not the only one whose first thought was that when seeing the trailer title a couple of days ago.

Nice to see a trailer for once which leaves more questions than basically being all the best bits of the movie and you might as well just watch it and save yourself the time.

Really enjoyed this, does a slight bait and switch with the theme but overall all 3 actors played their parts brilliantly, doesn't lean on on the usual horror tropes such as cheap jump scares constantly or loud noises.

It's more of a trying to work the 'puzzle' out with horror elements than being a pure horror flick. Highly recommend.

Watched a load of upcoming movie trailers and this is the only thing that caught my attention.

Edit: Didn’t relise it was out.

I watched it yesterday with my wife, whilst she said she enjoy our, she said she wouldn’t watch it again.
I enjoyed it, but would want to watch it again to make sure I hadn’t missed anything and understood the film fully.
Hugh Grant played his part very well, looked old in the film which made me feel sad as that makes me old too, not as old as Hugh though.

Film was interesting, dark and entertaining, I’d give it 7/10.

Certified crap. A very generous 5/10.

Now I see why the trailer gave away so little.....
I advise anyone thinking of watching this to skip it unless they genuinely wish to waste 2 hours of their life or have nothing else new to watch AND are willing to go in with very low expectations

It's more a thriller than a horror, and a poor one at that. All the religious stuff was boring and then they start talking about simulations and NPCs, I almost turned off tbh. As a non religious person it was off putting, for a religious person, possibly offensive :D

I'm really only interesting it for hugh grant - was he at least any good?

My overall sentiments were that it relies too heavily on ‘the mystery’ and, once that had substantially progressed, I felt underwhelmed.

Heretic (at the Cinema)

Two Mormons try to convert a man at his house, but all may not be as seems…

I had pretty high hopes for this based on other reviews but this one wasn’t for me.

I do have things to say about it but… if you’re going to watch it, go in blind, I suppose.

This film has three core strengths.

(I) The 3 leads are good. Well acted.

(II) It does a great job at showing the threat, menace and uncertainty that vulnerable young women can face from men. Very uncomfortable at times.

(III) The uncertainty of what will happen next and where it is going.

Beyond that though, it’s not great. It was quite slow and the theology discussions never really amounted to much. I didn’t think the ‘answer’ to the riddle was anywhere near as clever as the prolong set-up promised. I can this being a bit of a chore on a rewatch.

5.5/10

Wife gave it 6.5/10
