Does anyone know the status of hiring a Mustang from Hertz? I have heard that they have stopped supplying them due to a new model Mustang on the horizon. I called the Hertz call centre today but their answer is that I will get a Mustang or a Sebring. I don't want a Sebring.

Has anyone been over there recently and hired a Mustang and if so can you shed any light? I'm off to Dallas in September and will be dropping the car off in New Orleans 10 days later.

Ta :)

They're still showing on thier websites. Can't find any good models though - all seem to be V6s and autos.

Mustangs in the USA are like our Astra coupes - nothing special.

i had a regular V6 Mustang when i was out a few years ago. Its not super quick, but more than adequate for US driving where you cant go that fast anyway, it wasnt much more than run of the mill stuff and was a bit different to look at. o.k. they arent rare in the US, but as a visitor its better than the non-descript blob of american car you normally get.

Doesn't look that slow to me.

Those stats are wrong and Ford basically lied in their brochures.

Power is really 190bhp, 0-60 is 8.5s and 1/4 miles are 16.5. Bear in mind the car weighs 1520kg - Ford were dreaming about anyone believing it would do those figures even with the 210bhp they claimed.

The older 3.8 Essex V6 fitted to pre-'04 Mustangs had 190hp, the current 4.0 Cologne has 210. And when Motor Trend compared a V6 auto convertible 'stang to the Pontiac G6 drop-top they got 0-60 in 7.3sec so slightly better than 8.5....

Mmm, Hertz Mustang

you need one of the premium cars that gurantees a shelby mustang

think its about £650 for a fortnight when i was looking at hertz for holiday rentals.

Not on US pump fuel it doesn't. Ford tested it with 99ron and remapped to get the 210bhp figure.

Yes, and Motor Trend got the fiddled version - infact the car provided in that review was even found to have a different exhaust system missing a pair of cats, so it was probably even higher than the 210bhp official figure :-) Oh, and 7.3s is still not the 6.9s Ford quoted.

I thought they sold of all the Hertz mustangs and replaced them with Hertz Z06 corvettes.

Some of the companies will guarntee mustangs, I found hertz orverly expensive tbh. Your other option is to wait until you get there and see who has one, but you have no idea on price then.

I had V6 hardtop last year and it was ok, nice noise being an automatic it wasn't the quickest with gear change etc but still way more fun to drive than the sebring.

Sorry to go all GD on you, but....source? It wouldn't surprise me at all if it was true, mind.

Thanks for that. I am, after all, utterly incapable of telling the difference between those two numbers.

My source isn't in print on the internet so I can't quote it.

Feel free to disregard what I quoted though, everyone's entitled to a little skepticism.

Ah, okay.

Like I said, I wouldn't be totally shocked if it was true. Just wish they'd hurry up, can the ancient Cologne V6 and drop the latest version of the Cyclone/Duratec 3.5 in there. They probably won't go as far as putting the EcoBoost version in as it would pretty much monster the V8 models, but I bet some enterprising hot-rodders will try it.

Rented a droptop mustang last year and a hardtop one the year before. Both were adequate but certainly not quick. My TDI Audi would have blown the doors off either of them.

Gotta admit though that driving down PCH in a mustang droptop is cool and performance was the last thing on my mind! I think i've rented them from both Hertz and Avis. IIRC they couldnt guarantee a Mustang over a Sebring, but I made the reservation and then called the outlet in SanFran so they could sort it out ready for my arrival.

It's annoying that in the US if you wanted to buy a fully loaded Mustang GT Premium, then it'd cost you $40450.... That's just a little under £25000.

That's cheaper than a new Focus RS!
