Ok so I bought the follow computer from OcUK a couple of years ago:


Intel Core 2 Quad Pro Q6600 "LGA775 Kentsfield" 2.40GHz (1066FSB)
Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 750GB SATA-II 16MB Cache
Samsung SH-S203BEBN 20x DVD±RW SATA Dual Layer ReWriter
Antec P180 Advanced Super Midi Tower Case
Abit IP35 Pro (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
Corsair HX 620W ATX Modular SLI Compliant Power Supply
OcUK GeForce 8800 GTX 768MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI
Tuniq Tower 120 CPU Cooler
Crucial Ballistix 2GB (2x1GB) DDR2 PC2-5300C3 667MHz

It has been amazing, never had a problem with it. I tried to turn it on the other day and the post message was 9.0. which relates to "the point where the awardbios takes over the boot". I have checked on the interwebs and it looks like a fairly common problem that unfortunately means the motherboard is broken.

I guess my question would be, would you guys either
a) Replace the motherboard as everything else works fine and still runs every game I throw at it
b) Buy a new computer and sell the old. How much do you think I would get for the old? I might just buy a cheapy motherboard and use it as a media centre!

If anyone has any ideas regarding fixing it of course let me know! I have reset the BIOS and tried stripping down components but the number of threads out there with the same problem with no resolution is depressing!

Edit - arse I didn't realise I was posted this in GD. Could a mod move this to hardware?

I know how you feel and just to think I was even watching Balance of Terror on Youtube last night!

If you need a new motherboard you should stalk the Members Market forum and try an pick a good 2nd hand model, new P45’s a few and far between and aren’t that cheap either.

before you spend any money you would need to test the above hardware first if possible . . . . not an easy call for the mobo and PSU but is there anyway you can try the system with different memory or try your memory in another? also one stick at a time/different slots etc . . . . same for the GPU

It may well be that the ABIT mobo has just stopped working but it could also be another piece of hardware . . . . I'm just trying to save you any aggro from maybe buying some hardware you don't need . . .

If I was a betting man I'd say it could be the Crucial Ballistix has croaked . . . . get some trouble-shooting done and let us know . . . good luck! :)

I still don't know what I am going to do. Will sleep on it - already suffering from game withdrawl symptoms though :/
 
id look at a p45.

i dont know how many will agree with me on this one, but perhaps go with some ddr3 whilst you're at it, which you should be able to reuse should you upgrade the lot when intel refreshed its lineup?
 
Are we at the end of the current chipset?

It's amazing how little i know about hardware inbetween upgrades! Is there some decent reading that can get me up to speed on the current chipset, what intel is going to replace it with and the benefits of waiting?

I normally find that its best to never wait otherwise you will then wait for the next big thing and find that you just dont have a computer for a year :D

check the crucial memory if you can

a p45 would be a more than adequate replacement

p35 went the way of the dodo a looong time ago, replaced by p45 somewhere mid 2008ish. Currently p45 along with socket 775 in general is EOL

The current lineup for intel is socket 1366 (introduced early 2009) with an X58 chipset for high end core i7 9xx series, socket 1156 (introduced late 2009) with a p55 chipset for mainstream core i5 7xx and i7 8xx series, and the same socket 1156 with a H55/H57 chipset for the entry core i3 and core i5 6xx series.


socket 1366 is due to be replaced in Q3 2011, and despite being newer, socket 1156 is due to be replaced in Q1 2011.

think that pretty much covers it
