Hey guys,

Just found Overclockers yesterday from another site discussing building your own machine so thought I'd wander over and check it out.

Well anyway, what would be great is if you guys could give me some advice, tips, information etc...I've never built a computer, nor really spent much time taking notice of the inner workings of them lol, but after a series of computer failures I'm seriously considering it. It'd be nice to have a machine that meet the specs I want with the added bonus of knowing that *I* built it.

The real question is of course, can I do it lol. I'm not saying I know nothing, but yeah the knowledge is pretty limited. However, I'm a fairly quick learner and eager to do so, fairly good at research and I can work out most stuff eventually. I'm also fairly technically minded and enjoy poking around in stuff lol.

I've got an old PC stack from quite a few years ago, I was considering using it as an autopsy piece really, getting inside and just checking things out, working out what goes where etc with the help of the wonderful world wide web, so that when the time comes I'll stand at least a small chance of understanding how to put the theory into practice lol.

If you guys could give me some honest help and advice that'd be fantastic - I mean okay, if you really do want to laugh me out the site as a noob, go for it, but at least do it gently lol. It might make me more determined of course lol, so be warned :p

Ultimately, I'm looking to end up with a pretty decent gaming machine, (hopefully lol). It'd be quite nice to go with dual graphics cards and I'd like a machine with a fair bit of space and power behind it. Now to me that all sounds great, but I've always relied on someone else telling me what's going into my computer to get what I want, so I'm starting the research at the bottom. The cooling side of it is something I'd definately like to look into more - all I can really say I know is that the general consensus always seems to be that water cooling is the better choice, at least that's how it seems, but other than that I'm just your average "Water? With electricity? Uhhhh..." type person lol. I've read a few articles that recommend the OCZ Vendetta cooling stack combined with things like the Antec 900/1200 cases but I've not had a chance to really look into them yet. On the graphics side I've been trying to read up about SLI/CrossFire setups, how they compare etc but I've only brushed the surface and it was late so not sure how much I took in lol. On the processor front I'll admit I'm clueless, the best I know is that quad core sounds better than dual core and the new i7 sounds soooooperdoooper lmao.

Anywho, I'm waffling on trying to sound like I can hold my own and not look like an idiot, which probably means I've just convinced you all I'm a fool noob of the highest order, but I'm hoping once you've stopped laughing at me I can get some help etc :D I figure, everyone has to start somewhere..... :D

Yeah, you can do it. Its like Lego. Sort-of.

Its pretty hard to go drastically wrong if you take your time doing it, and clear space around where you're slotting it together. Theres nothing like standing on your shiny new graphics card to put a downer on your day.

lol at all the people who think they got him :D

Do I need to start checking whats in my pants?

On a seperate note, should I be concerned by all the claiming? Lol, I did think it was pretty amazing that the thread had got 10 replies in the space of a few minutes lol.... so uh, claimed eh?
