HG Change

Mates got a Hyundai Accent and it went into the garage with a suspected "timing problem" according to his parents who know less than I do, but anyway went into garage and apprently need a new HG at a price of £600.

So realistically would it be possible for someone like me whos not done much car stuff but pretty good with normal DIYdo it?

What else is worth doing at the same time?? (not sure havent seen service history)

Also what sort of cost would i be looking at?

Lastley they said it wasnt warped if it turns out to be how much extra for skimming (either properly or cash in hand

)

Well just got a phone call back and its £24+Vat for skimming

So anyone know a website for the bits i need as the local motorfactors is closed

Are you sure it's the head gasket? That's a pretty major failure hence the high cost - has it overheated at all?

Check under the filler cap for a mayo like substance - if this is present then the oil has been mixing with the water suggesting a head gasket failure

It's a pretty big job so I personally wouldn't do it if you're not mechanically minded

Havent a clue just got told by the mate that it was idling rough and was poor at accelerating and took to garage and they said HSF

Was it using a lot of water? That's another symptom

I'd definitely check under the filler cap though

only if the gasket has failed oil>water. rough running would usually mean its either failed water>combustion chamber or oil > combustion chamber
any reputable garage would have done a compression check on the cylinders to diagnose the failure.
