hi guys, i have vista home premium 64 bit, i also have a 500 gb samsung hdd t166 i think. vista seems to be seekign information from it all the time, which is kinda annoying because it makes a small clicking noise all the time, it's starting to wind me up! is there anything that can be done?

Could well be the Superfetch service.

Try typing 'net stop superfetch' while it's thrashing away to see if it stops. Or you can stop or disable superfetch from your services mmc.

Someone else posted the same request on a different forum and it was down to the indexing for searching. Not sure what the superfetch thing is but I am guessing it is the indexing? What I do know is that addressing indexing/superfetch fixed the other persons problems.

Is it a fresh install? If it is, then Vista needs to create the initial index. During this time you'll hear your HD thrash like mad. After a day or 2 this will cease and you'll hardly ever notice it.

I have Vista 64 and have never noticed this problem. It could just be because my Samsung drive is very quiet though.

i have a suttle so my comp is closer to me, would this matter much? what drive do you have, i may have the same.... does yours make any noise when accessing?

I think the main causes of excessive disk thrashing in Vista are (in no particular order):
1. indexing
2. superfetch
3. Windows defender
4. system restore

I've disabled all but system restore on my system and there's a lot less disk thrashing.

brill mate, any chance you can walk me through how to disable them?

is it going to slow things down a lot?

On a fast enough computer, Indexing, Superfetch etc, are all good things. But on a sub par system Indexing really hammers the computers performance. I even found turning it off didnt help. Indexing was still running! (Even though the indexing features were disabled)

However, switched to a new fast hard disk, and the system is fast, even with indexing and superfetch enabled.

it's not slow, i have a decent comp as you can see from my specs, it's just the hdd accessing the disk too much, which makes it noisey (little clicking sounds) .... should my samsung t166 500gb drive be quieter than this?

http://www.blackviper.com/WinVista/servicecfg.htm - this will help

If someone is so impatient that waiting a few extra seconds for an application to load or to find a file, then they need to relax! :p

Windows defender - it's the scheduled scan that needs to be turned off. Do it from the control panel.

It could also be the on-the-fly defrag that runs too. Ive got a raptor and its pretty noisy when its doing things like that.

Learn something new everyday. :)
Thanks, changed my schedule for that so it does it when I'm not using the PC.

My install of Vista which is about four weeks old due to new hardware, does not thrash the hard drive. I have loads of data, about a terrabyte of stuff over three hard drives. I have not disabled anything and only notice a lot of disk activity if Outlook is open. I guess its indexing my emails. I have found over the past 8 months of Vista RTM, drive thrashing occurs when there is something wrong. It could be memory related, I found when I had a dodgy stick of ram, vista had to keep loading all the time. I even got a few BSODs and other random crashes though. My guess is you have a driver that Vista is not happy with or some software installed it doesnt like. I could be way off here, but thats my experience. I do leave my PC on 24/7 so perhaps its caused because you are booting up often?

that's interesting actually, good idea. sometimes when it loads it has windows recall thingy in the start menu bit when i havern't even accessed it!! you know the backup centre.

it wouldn't be to do with an unstable overclock would it?

The HD clicking could be the Samsung drive doesn't have acoustic management enabled. Or maybe the new models don't use it, as I'm still on a 250GB model.

Not sure if this is the correct file, as the one I used for my model was called hutil.

Check file here

Will be able to enabled acoustic management while booted into DOS. Won't stop the issue of HD thrashing, but might make it slightly quieter. There will be a slight performance hit associated with enabling quieter operation mode.

When I tried Vista I disabled Windows Defender real time scanning (look at program options).
