hhmm should i upgrade to and i5 from q6600?

Im in the same boat, managed to get a GD65 board just because it was so cheap and am a bit confused with what to do! Could get an i5 and some RAM for just over £200, and would probably get a decent price for my current stuff (Asus P5Q-E, E8500 @ 4.4GHz and 4GB OCZ Flex). However, got full water blocks for my mobo at the moment and would be a shame to loose most of my loop! haha, plus dont know if I'd notice performance boost that much

I decided to go the i7 root, I was tired of the temps and power usage of my q6600 at 3.8ghz.

Plus I felt now was the right time to sell the Q6600, mobo, and ram for a decent price (I got 160 for it, from someone I know well so I let them have 20 or so off.)

Im looking to upgrade to a Q9550. Will be the cheapest and best option I think. You cant say a i5 750 is going to be that much faster than a Q9550 can it.

Hhmm so I guess I'm goning i5 lol my cpu sold for £90 in less than 6 hours :)

So dose anyone know how long a wait it is for the second batch of msi boards? No computer this week now at least the sun is out:)

Hopefully the rest of the rig will sell now.....fingers crossed

yeah i did have 8 gb (ah see your point lol:o)

only have 4 gb left. i was really impressed with this OCZ Reaper X hpc PC2 8000 stuff looks really cool and works well.

havent seen any OCZ ddr3 dual channel yet

Well i'm a bit behind with the times atm, On the i5 release day i ordered a Q9450 :p :o Should be alright for a year i should imagine.

I really wouldn't advise buying new S775 parts now, well not at the prices they are right now at least, second hand bargains sure or cheap end of line deals, I will probably see if I can pick up a £65 Q6600 when I see some :P

But if you are going to invest in new stuff, I would/did go for an I5.

hmm well not too sure myself i also have a q6600, and a stock speeds was lead to belive that in games there wasnt a noticable difference between it and an i7 chip, certainly not worth the 500 quid it wouldve cost back then, so an i5 is a cut down version of the i7 i wouldve thought so even less of a difference if any,

the op asked if it was worth going i5 route from a q6600, does anyone have any benchmarks of a q6600 v i5 as i cant belive it will be worth the money when getting an ssd drive for your os would make a bigger more noticeable difference for a lot less.

If all you are really interested in is gaming performance than stick with your Q6600, you wont notice a big difference yet, your graphics card will make much more of a difference.

If you're going to stick with S775 - take that whilst you can and try bumping your system with SSDs/good overclock - That'll keep you going for another year.

This is my plan for the next year or so, my next upgrade will be westmere based. Just need to get a good cooler & some tips/advice on here.

Well its done I will be ordering my cpu and memory today. As I managed to raise £224 from my cpu, mobo and 4gb of ram :)

I recommend others that were thinking it to change now....

Oh and just spoke to thermalright and my cpu cooler should go stright on bouns

Yep, in a similar boat here... E6600 at 3.4~ with 4Gb RAM and a GTX 280..

Decided not to upgrade just yet, hopefully that's a wise choice :p

i would say it is. i game a lot and all i really need at the moment is a graphics card upgrade, so you should be sweet with your GTX28O. surely you must be maxing your games out? i think you could just try to tweak your bios and squeeze 3.6 out of your E66OO :D

wait for the next gen westmere or even sandybridge :p

I do not think i5 offers a significant enough advantage over 775 quads to warrant an upgrade. Going from a Q6600 to i7 @ 4GHz was not much of a bump for me. Perhaps when the die shrink comes along and i5's hit 4.5 to 5GHz things will change.

However, for anyone buying from scratch (if you have an old system or it will be your first pc) i5 is the better long-term option.
