Hey all,

My son wants his first PC and has a budget of £1600 which is to include a monitor. Please could someone have a quick look over and sanity check/give any criticisms if needed? He wants 1440p but understands that the machine will be entry/mid level so may not run everything.

I've not bought an AMD graphics card for years and years so is this card ok??

Any suggestions would be massively appreciated.

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £1,636.87 (includes delivery: £0.00)

Big thanks in advance :)

If you can afford to wait a few weeks I'd hold off. Spending £499.99 on the 7800XT now would be daft as the AMD 9070 and 9070XT should be launching around the £500 mark (we hope!) and that would give you substantially better RT performance, and FSR4. :) Maybes only other point I can make is to go for C30 6000Mhz EXPO memory if you can for £20 more.

There are some decent boards around the £150 mark such as the Gigabyte B650 Eagle AX. The pcie slot is only gen 4 but not really an issue unless you put a 5090 in there.

You could also opt for a cheaper cooler such as a Thermalright Peerless Assassin for around £30. They have RGB variants.

That psu is a bit pricey for 750W. You can get an 850W such as the Phanteks AMP for less.

I would go with a 2TB SSD. A 1TB is a bit on the small side for a gaming pc. The 2TB SN770 is about an extra £40.

Thank-you very much for your helps guys. Will adjust according to your advice. I have already told him it might be better to wait because of the new stuff coming at the end of the month or so, so might have to re highlight this issue.

So with your suggestions I have following (and will push for him to wait on the 9070XT)

Alternative GPU saves £65

This case has 4 argb fans just to put an alternative in the mix

I did look at Air but have been away from it so long I wasn't sure what was decent or not. I'm guessing dual tower has more performance but obviously wider footprint?
The Peerless Assassin is a great cooler. I have one on my 5700X in a Lian-Li 216, and it is very quiet and keeps the cpu nice and cool. They do have a bigger footprint but that doesn't really matter once it is installed.
