Hi all. I'm a HongKonger. Just came to UK for about 5 months to do a top-up undergraduate degree.

The reasons that I came to UK is not because I wanna do a UK degree, but, I would like to have my live here in Britian. Partly because I've a British citizenship and mainly because I don't like the lifestyle in HongKong.

I've been a software developer for a government IT project for a year and currently looking for graduate level jobs. I thought it would be not difficult since I've got quite a good looking work exp. However, things doesn't goes well. Moreover, I found it quite hard to make friends here. Everythings make me exhausted and frustrated.

Would anyone share some advice with me? ;)

Need to be a bit more specific friend. What exactly you need help/advice with?

For job, would anyone suggest good ways for hunting a software job?

For friends, I am trying to make friends all the time. Most of them are friendly however, I understand that the main obstacle is my speaking of English. Since it's not my native language, I'm a bit slow to operate myself in English. I've tried my best, but quite frustrated sometimes...

Ok, best way I can advise for you to find a decent job is to register with some recruitment agencies.

Try places like monster.co.uk. Get your CV on there and make it viewable to employers. Also try totaljobs.com and places like fish4job.com.

Theres loads more so if anyone wants to post em feel free.

Finding a job in the UK isn’t easy, but as you are in the IT sector, have you looked into registering with a contract firm? They basically put you in touch with companies that are looking for short term staff, but it gets you some work.

Get some work, and you will meet up with a few work colleagues etc. If all your work is around the same area it shouldn’t take too long to make a few friends. Moving from one country to another can be very daunting, but it isn’t going to take too long to find your feet if you keep your head screwed on correctly. Find one friend, and they normally introduce you to their friends, and as soon as you know it, you're in the circle of friends.

I commend your resolve to do such a task. It isn’t easy to just one day up and leave your homeland. Many find it hard to move from one town to the next, so I do sympathise with you.

You could always join a gym or take some type of cheap night class. Once you have a job and are getting funds into your accounts, the opportunity to find friends becomes better. The UK is full of places to find friends.

Many over here like to socialise, who knows. After a few visits to a gym or something you’ll soon be going out and wondering where all your time is going.

Internet is always a good place to find friends as well. You’d be surprised how many online “pen friends” you can find. Not been unknown to find that special someone either.

I wish you luck with your endeavours, and above all Welcome to the UK. Just remember – When you come to buy a car – Buy a Honda.. A little bit of home from home. He he.. Sorry couldn’t help myself.
