ive got a hi-fi set up that's about 8 years old give or take 2 years, and when i play Cd's on it, sometimes the Cd's get cut for a few seconds and when i see the display on the screen it shows the times for the CD going back or forward in one place but only happens for 2-3 seconds and is annoying because it happens randomly!

You sure its not just dirty discs?
Failing that it may be that the laser pickup is showing signs of wear.

Sounds like tracking problems. Could be the laser lens is dirty. Is this whilst playing CD-R's or does it happen whilst playing original pressed discs too?

What CD player is it?

If it's one where you can see the laser lens then try giving it a clean, use some meths or isopropyl alcohol on a cotton bud and gently clean the lens.
