hi, I am a bot. How do I get prevented from spamming on forums -.-

Having captcha questions seems to stop most spam sign-ups. E.g. "What colour is the sky?" and similar questions. It's also a lot more accessible than the standard captcha for people that use screen readers. :)

Much much more accessible to use a question like "2+2=" or "is ice hot or cold" than captcha. Captcha is horrible for screen readers to use, well horrible = impossible as they can't read the letters/numbers and the audio version is distorted so badly that its hard for even humans to hear!

ReCaptcha is pretty good, the text is readable and the audio version is a snippet from an old radio program and not garbled in any way.

Some of the best captcha's I've seen have an image with say 9 'things' on them, and ask a question like "How many kittens are there?" :)

Manually dispatched confirmation emails, captchas, not allowing "free" email accounts, etc...

The first and the last suggestions here help a great deal.

Captcha's are great, but can give certain users issues unless they're done well.

I cannot stand the Vbulletin captcha, it's so difficult to read and involves too much effort. You have to re-do it every time you want to search too :\. Those human questions are the best.

I've put NoSpam! onto a couple of vBulletin forums and that stopped automated spam immediately.

There's a few human spammers that still get through, but it's few and far between.

Though I'm thinking about taking gmail out, but I haven't heard any complaints. I don't think OcUK permits it, either (at least they didn't during the last Nuke).

If you block gmail.com, might as well block googlemail.com. If I register either, the email ends up in the same inbox for me.

Although to be honest, never seen a spambot with gmail.com

Edit: Doh, just noticed googlemail.com at the bottom. Ignore me :p
