Hibernate vs stand by vs shut down

How do you enable S3 sleep?

I'm running W7. Do I need to change any settings in my bios?

How do you wake it from sleep?

Sorry for the noob questions, never used it before.

S3 is enabled in the bios. Under power management normally.

On my pc, ismack the keyboard and it wakes up, same for hibernate. Hibernate is, I believe, s4 suspend, and is software based(???)

most modern motherboards support s1+s3 by default. Hibernate needs to be turned on on XP.

How does Hybrid Sleep Work?

Hybrid sleep is sleep + hibernate. It puts you PC into sleep so that it can resume very quickly, but also writes out the content to your disk like hibernate would so that if you lose power all your open files aren't lost - it'll just take slightly longer to resume.

I only use Sleep on my desktop, can't see the point of using Hibernate on a system that's plugged into the mains (unless Sleep doesn't work, of course). Only gets shut down if there are updates that need to be installed or if I need to unplug it from the power for any reason.

I use Hibernate all the time on my notebook though, bit quicker than a full start-up.

I sleep my pc during the day, then hibernate when turning it off at night. Resuming from Hibernation is a good 30 seconds quicker than a reboot on my machine, plus all my open programs are saved. Rebooting is only used for updates & stuff.

I have got my power management settings to turn my monitor off after 10 mins, sleep after 15 mins, hibernate after 69 min - so it can turn itself off and i dont have to do anything.

I use sleep during the day, and hibernate at night. The power LED on my computer flashes when asleep, which is way too obnoxious to put up with at night. If anyone has any idea how to stop the power LED from flashing (without unplugging it completely) I would love to know.

i use S3 standby on my pc, takes about 5 seconds to resume

on every laptop, I always setup hibernate, the battery drain from S3 is too high to use on an laptop
