'Hide your tats, customers won't put up with it'

He can like it or lump it.

He could also try the religious grounds approach, those ******* get away with anything.

if its a new job i wouldn't kick up a fuss, i would explain however that due to the nature of the work and the possibility that the work place can get hot that it might cause problems for you in terms of your health and also as a health and safety point of view (passing out from overbearing heat + heavy machinary = no no normally :) )

It's all a bit hit and miss with cases such as these. In the event that someone has a case then the person applying usually will know if they do indeed have solid grounds for it to go to court. I.e being discriminated in work for being any sort of minority is an obvious one.

On second thoughts if the Op's friend is happy with his job, taking legal action may not be the best idea because implications will happen. If not then I don't see why he shouldn't.

He works for a company where image is absolutely everything.

Why is he suprised they would make such a request? He should simply comply, as its a reasonable enough request.

If he can't do it when working with fast moving machinery, they're asking him to put himself at unnecessary risk which is dodgy to say the least. Surely health and safety outweighs appearances in this case?

Also, if there's nothing in the contract, and nothing said prior, can he not just continue regardless? Would there not be ramifications for dismissing somebody on those grounds?

I'm on the side of the mechanic here, wouldn't bother me if it was my car, shame that people still find this a problem. Let it be a warning to those who are thinking about getting tattoos to think twice about it. Not least because they usually look awful in my opinion.

Seriously how many customers are really bothered about being served by someone with tattoos on their arms?

What exactly is so wrong or scary about it?

People who get tattoos without thinking how it might affect current/future careers... lol?

The thing is that tattoos on the body shouldnt affect future careers as log as they arent rude or offensive?

Its just as silly as places that tell you to tuck your shirt in and wear a tie in the middle of summer.

It is a bit silly to get tats on your lower arms, IMO. Get them where they can be covered easily to avoid this kind of thing. You can't have it both ways - if you want them where they can be seen most of them time then you have to accept that is likely to cause problems.

What until he either passes out from the heat, or gets caught in some machinery?

They problem is, they didn't mention it in the initial interview that got him the job in the first place...

Surely its company policy not to have bare skin exposed when working close to fast moving machinery anyway? Infact, isn't it law that you must wear the right protection or have long sleeves when working in close proximity to such things?

I think this is yet another sad britboy fantasy :(

As above, I'd be amazed if anyone is allowed exposed arms when working close to such machinery.

Exactly.

I have little sympathy for people who get tattoos on show. I have no problem with tattoos at all but there will be some people that do.

When you get a tattoo, you are usually of a mature enough age to realize that it could potentially harm your future prospects.
