Hiding Stuff

Back in the day before I knew about streaming websites I'd store this kind of stuff in some totally random folder on Windows that nobody could ever accidently find.

Portable hard drive. Store all your porn on it until they leave.

You'd better hide it well, because if I was one of those kids I'd search high and low for anything I shouldn't find.

If they're PC illiterate there's no way I'd let them use my account, not if there's anything you don't want getting deleted or messed with by mistake or viruses you want to avoid.

Simple solution:
  1. Create a new user account and lock it down (e.g. the guest account) or
  2. Disconnect your hard drives and only allow them to run a Live CD (e.g. Ubuntu) set it to boot automatically Et Voilà, no damage to your machine

Unless you have pornographic material of their Aunty which would potentially destroy a large part of their soul if viewed.

Erm, pornographic material of their Aunty.... that would be the OP's mum then right?

You're weird :p

edit: Damn, someone got there before me!

I tried dozens of other ways including windows own protection features and I found nothing to be as good as Folder Guard.
I thought it was that good I decided to buy it for £12.

$40 now and from what the website says it doesn't seem too special to me. I mean yeah it offers password protected folders but other than that. Maybe for $12 it would be worth it.

I stand by my comment that 90% of people don't need software like that.

It offers totally hidden folders or even empty folders that can't be searched by the CLI so if somebody wants to search for my 500 gig of GILF material they won't see it.
Of course removing it from the computer and putting it in another then brings everything back.

Truecrypt does that too, is free, and wouldn't be readable on another PC :p.

Truecrypt, done

also I am pretty sure this whole "the kids are coming around" story is actually more like "The feds are on the way, Help!"

Good grief, 19 steps for all that
I'm glad I tried it but I will now be removing it.

Folder Guard - Right click > hide

You only need to do those 19 steps once then it is just a case of mountjng and dismounting. Does not need to be 19 steps if you are handy with command line

I haven't tried the CLI but using the program to Mount/Unmount is a right faff unless I've missed something.

So I've got my secret file that is actually a 20 meg drive (for test purposes) and I've put a couple of MP3's in.
I then Unmount the drive and it disappears.
To get it back I run the program, choose the file again and Mount it to a drive where I can now see the files.
That's a lot of clicks compared to Folder Guard but nice for free.
