It's great that Hitachi are launching the new 1TB drive shortly. I see they are also launching a 750GB version at approximately the same time. These two drives should make the market a bit more competitive, and bring down the 750GB price of the current Seagate drives.

Anybody have a rough idea of when these might be available at OcUK? I guess it will be before Seagate launches their 1TB drive?

The Hitachi 1Tb drives are already shipping in new Dell systems and Hitachi themselves say they'll ship to the retail channels in Q1 so I'd expect them in the next 6 weeks or so. The Seagate 7200.11 series hasn't even been officially announced (the 7K1000 was announced last year) so it's not possible to speculate on a date. I've only seen a link to a compliance statement on Google which must have been mistakenly posted on a public part of the Seagate site, the document itself had disappeared by the time I saw the link.

Big disks are fine but imagine loosing that amount of data in 1 go if the drive dies. I've got a 250gb and 500gb SATA drive and if the 500gb drive died I'd be up a rather smelly brown stream without a paddle. Yes I know there are things called backups but backing up that amount of data also becomes difficult. What I currently do is backup important stuff to the 250gb OS drive just in case.
