Hey guys,

My girlfriend and I went to visit my dad (first time she met him in the 16 months we have been going out!). It has been a year since I have seen him and whilst chatting away, he informed me he went to get a blood test after finding out high cholesterol runs in the family. And like clockwork, it has effected him as well. So he has been put on some sort of tablets and other bit's and bob's of advice.

So, naturally I intend to get checked this week and see what happens.

I am 22, going on 23 in a couple of months and realise it's early for me to really see any effect from the above. However, I would like some advice on what has changed for those that have been diagnosed with this.

I eat fairly healthy, with the odd pizza and takeaway here and there. But I also eat a lot of cheese and mayo sandwiches... Which my dad said is a big no no :(

Anyways, anyone that has some advice on diet's, how things are since you have been diagnosed and on the case with it. Fitness reports. Just a general low down of any information/advice would be greatly appreciated and fantastic.

I know the doc will probably repeat most of what you lot will say, but it's always good hearing it from the horses mouth rather than a leaflet.

Thanks, Ags.

Lower salt intake, thats bread included.

Look onthe packet, practically every single manufactured food produced is swimming in the stuff.

Don't smoke.

My dad has just been told he has high cholesterol, theyve advised he lose weight and also change his diet.
Cut out/down on: bread especially white bread, saturated fats, and lots of red fatty meat.

Hes been told that sunflower seeds, fresh fish, and walnuts are good for lowering cholesterol also the specialised products (spreads) that you can buy.

The trouble my dad has with his diet is because of his weight hes borderline diabetes so fruit intake (sugars) and much more have to be monitored.

(I do hope this is correct, this is what my dad has been advised)
