Hi, I have a X2 3800+ and a Thermealtake Blue Orb II and over the last few weeks i've noticed my cpu temp getting higher and higer. It's normally at 33c idle and 44c load but now it is at 43c idle and 54c load (sometimes goes up to 57c on a hot day). This is at stock speeds.
I've tried cleaning the heatsink and cpu and re-appying AS5 but it hasn't made any difference.

Is there anything else I can do to help get the temperature down?
I've heard talk about lapping a HSF, what is this and how do you do it?

Thanks

Are you sure that the fan is working properly on the heatsink? Those load temps are getting towards the dangerous range. The blue orb isn't meant to be an amazing cooler - maybe a change is on the cards (e.g. Scythe Mine). What case cooling do you have?

Lapping is using abrasive papers to improve the finish on the bottom of the heatsink. Google it for a guide. It isn't hard to do - I've done a few now - but it requires a fair amount of time and care.

// EDIT // And lapping isn't going to bring those temps down considerably anyway - it only really gives you a few C difference.

The fan is working fine, I have 2 80mm case fans (a YS-Tech and a cheap one).
If lapping only decreases the temp by a few degrees then I won't bother.
I can't really afford to get a new hsf just now but i'll try and get a scythe ninja when I can.

I think it might be something that i'm doing wrong as when I had the stock cooler it reached 63c on load.

Thanks

If by any chance you baught the boxed version of the 3800, the stock amd cooler would appear to perform better at stock speeds then the blue orb going by the temps posted.

I have also just fitted an X2 3800+ at stock speeds, and it is running 54-55C under continuous 24/7 full load with a Thermaltake Silent Boost K8 cooler. The weather is pretty hot at the moment, my room temp is about 28C. I expect the CPU temp will drop a few degrees in a few months time. I doubt these temps are unusual - in fact I'd say it is very common in summer expecially for people using the stock cooler, and is safe. I will need to power mine down a few times to get the thermal paste to go through a few cool down and warm up cycles. Supposely that will lower the temps a couple of degrees, but I must say I've never noticed any benefit. I'll probably try to improve my case cooling too, and that can have a big effect. How is your case cooling ?
