High CPU usage on old system.

What would cause nero cd/dvd speed to use 88%CPU at 8x read?

1.2 ghz athlon (i think, maybe duron)

8 gig hdd (old, pre update)

PC chips mobo and 256meg PC133

new 80 wire IDE cable to replace 40 wire i found being used.

Liteon 48x12x48x CDRW

just run it again with task manager open and it's saying 100% cpu usage while reading the cd.

Sounds to me like your drive is working in PIO mode. Check it in Windows, and check it in the BIOS.

Agh!!! never thought of that!
