Instead of buying the official High Def pack for the xbox, I bought a Gamestar one:

Im just checking to make sure this will work fine, as it was much cheaper than any official one.

cheers

Should be fine, only thing to remember is that the console has to output an NTSC signal for component to work.

So either you need an NTSC Xbox, or something else which isnt allowed to be mentioned on here.

Yeah all good, im really curious how xbmc looks when playing decent xvids at high def. (Will it give Sky HD a run for its money??)

XBMC in hi-def looks awesome. I use it at 720p on my monitor and it's so much better than 576i or even 480P!

Well, yeah ;)

When it's upscaling DVDs it does a reasonable job but my standard def £60 DVD player looks better.

Oh, that yes, I for some reason only decided to comment on the interface. Doh! It does a fairly good job though, certainly not bad considering it wasn't made with upscaling in mind.

Complete utter disaster, of course i speak from experience.

1) The offical MS HD pack with PAL-NTSC softmod (non hardware mod)
2) The Neoya HD-VGA cable

Can't go wrong with the Neoya X2VGA+ (I learnt from the Man above about this beauty) ;).

It appears they don't do the particular model I purchased, rather, a better looking but not as simple version. I prefer the X2VGA+ than the X2VGA2

So what are you saying? This component set of leads wont work?

Im not paying 70 quid for an x2vga box, the VGA/DVI port will have my MCE plugged into it anyway.

Hmm I've just got this cable installed and its all ghosty at NTSC high def modes, so it just a crappy product? or am I doing something wrong?

I bought a £7 component cable for my Xbox. It works perfectly well with my Sammy LCD. It's just a shame the Xbox doesn't have the oomph to display divx or xvid encoded at 720p, or mpeg2 at that res for that matter.

What im saying is i had this device and im almost certain it just outputs RGB over the component cables. I cant recall exactly but do know its output was nothing like the MS HDTV cable. The neoya VGA was approx £45 but your better off with the offical HD cable.

Regards console picture quality the Nintendo Gamecube with 480p USA titles particulary F Zero is the pinnacle of quality on any standard def system. Dreamcast F355 via VGA is also a notable mention but the Xbox has a vastly improved picture over its rather soft GRB when using HD-Component connection.

*Please also be aware it does not scale 480p games to 720p just displays the game in the best resolution available, very few were 720p and even less 1080i. The good thing was that 95% of PAL games worked in 480p NTSC output mode.

Well something is definately screwed. Although it does work at the various res, xbmc is definately at 1280x720 (or something lik that) as it says in the system info, but i get horrible ghosting on everything.

Component via PAL is fine using it tho, its just NTSC HD modes that i get ghosting. I think it just doesnt do progressive scan.

I'll spend £30 and get an official cable.
